Victor Davis Hanson has posted an article with the title "Will California Ever Thrive Again?"

    The problems are overwhelming:

Bad education, bad road, high taxes, massive unfunded pension liabilities, an absurdly expensive high-speed train that no one wants, a high rate of diabetes, no new reservoirs to hold water against drought, rural and small-town hopeless poverty, half of all traffic accidents in L.A. are hit and run, and a third of all US welfare recipients, and so forth.

Will California ever thrive again? It seems that they have gone the way of the East Coast and New England and those areas are not making any quick comeback. The rich and the politicians have made the mess and who foresees their losing their grip on the middle and lower classes?

Victor is right here, it is sad to see what California has turned into. It's not like the East Coast, it's more like Northern Mexico, especially in the southern part of the state.

And it still has a huge economy and a large population, but it IS on the decline. The Democratic Party rules the state with an iron fist - high taxes, endless regulation and a nanny state mentality. Even worse, now there's a huge chance that crook Kamala Harris will be the next senator - she is awful, a commie jackboot and I'm glad I left there forever.

California will thrive again...for awhile. Right after the federal government uses our tax dollars to rescue them from themselves. But the state is run by liberals and will fail again.

It will when the left wingers move back to the Northeast and the right wingers move back to the Old South. Both as they are constituted today are post WW2 phenomena.

California is blessed to have people from the old south. They're hard working and conservative. No one anywhere at anytime is blessed by the presence of left wingers. They always leave destruction in their wake, then like a plague of locusts , move on to the next place to ruin it.:Biggrin

First, carpro, remember California was a free state. The California Column pushed the Texas based Confederate forces out of Arizona and New Mexico in 1862. So, I speak with more than a little bias. IOW, though a conservative Californian, I am not a supporter of the lost cause.

California will survive. But not before going the way of Detroit. Once the economy collapses and the state is bankrupt, hopefully the working people, the tax paying people, the people who support the entire infrastructure, will wake up and realize the disaster is one of their own making.

That awakening will hurt. It may even be brutal. It may result in violence in the streets. But California will survive. (I, being a California born native, and having spent almost 40 of my 70 years in California, admit to more than just a slight bias.) :)

Unfortunately, it will get a lot worse before it can get better.

California will be on it's way to recovery if they DUMP Jerry Brown and bring in a conservative who will allow irrigation development of the San Joaquin valley (known to contain up to 60 feet of top soil).

Only the Ukraine (also ridden with political no-brains) comes close to the fertility of CA's San Joaquin Valley.

In my opinion it's sinful to not farm the valley to its max using all drought fighting technology.

Unfortunately just dumping Moonbeam won't fix the problem. The radical left wing Democrats have a super majority in both the State Legislature and the State Senate.

John Steinbeck claimed that California used the state police to keep Okies out during the Dust Bowl days--I don't know if it is true. Maybe you can get rid of the Southerners with the police. I know that we are getting some Californians in Indiana, which is really weird, but they don't stay long because they are used to better things. :Alien:Alien:Alien

For several months in 1936, the Los Angeles Police Department sent 136 deputies to the state line to turn back migrants who didn't have any money. Bordering states like Arizona were angry that California was trying to "dump hoboes" back on them. Eventually, the police returned to Los Angeles, and the migrants kept coming.

When I was still with the SDSO we patrolled an unincorporated "island" completely surrounded by National City. Lincoln Acres was settled in the 1930s almost exclusively by people fleeing Oklahoma during the dust bowl days.

    Nope, living:
    • where winter precipitation goes into the gutter and isn't shoveled or plowed.
    • where decent inexpensive Chinese food is not considered exotic.
    • where the hills turn brown in the summer.
    • where you can tell east from west by either hitting the hills or the ocean.

    Yep. I don't do snow. :D

Yep. Love the Peking Palace. Owned by a Chinese family for 5 generations. Great food. Very reasonable price. And good carne asada just down the street too. :)

They don't call California "The Golden State" for nothing. Everything turns golden brown around June.

Yep. Navigation made easy. Even without GPS. :D

I can remember as a child when my grandfather would come north from LA to visit we'd go out to the Wooey Loy Gooey Restaurant in Chinatown. My dad had spent WW2 in the 14th Air Force. So, he taught us how to use chopsticks.

And I was born in San Francisco in 1953. Except for eight years between the Coast Guard and College, I've been here ever since. All my relatives live within a two hours of the high tide mark of the Pacific. None of them have lived east of the Mississippi for over a hundred years or east of the Continental Divide for over ninety. In generational terms that takes me back to my greatgrand parents on both sides.
