This is a real campaign ad, direct from Donald Trump.

Having a pretty critical thinking nature I noticed that little imperfection also, but didn't expect anyone trying to make a point about it, all things considered. Perhaps because, (1) I learned about simplifying in math through rounding things off, in this case to 1/3rd or IOWs 33%, basically the same thing. And (2) trying to make such an argument about imperfection probably does more to expose the problems with your reasoning than it does for Trump's.

But don't sweat it ITL, there is help for your problem:

So when Trump is talking about, say, a tax rate, or the tariff rate on imported goods, if he says 33% it could be 34%, or 32%, or possibly 33%.

I call it majoring in minors. In this case, it's just a by product of intense dislike, disappointment at not getting the person he wanted, and desperation.

If he's suggesting about a 1/3rd tax rate, meaning a rounded off figure, I think I will have gotten the idea. It is silly to suggest the actual rate wouldn't be specific and such only helps to make my point of exposing the issues you are bringing up as trivial attempts at making an argument of any real value.

Sorry, but if you put out an ad that says, "75 minutes total speech time", then say "24 minutes total applause" (with the numbers counting up being incremented by 1), then say "33% time spent applauding" (with the number counting up, being incremented by 1), you are not rounding off numbers, you are giving exact figures. FAIL.

No, it's Trump playing fast and loose with the facts, as usual.

The point is not shoddy math, the point is that this guy is such a narcissist that he puts out an ad listing the amount of applause he got from his speech.

I think the point was that people were talking about the unusually long speech and Trump's point was that 1/3rd of time was spent on applause. To me, it seems just a wee bit of a twist to insinuate he was merely expressing a excessive self-centered interest ("narcissism") rather than giving reason for the length of the speech ...but I'm sure you have your reasons [IMG] for making such a claim.

...And it's okay if you want to believe you've proved Trump "can't do math" or even if you want to change now and say what he actually was trying to do was "play fast and loose with the facts" [IMG] and fool people [IMG] into believing it was 33% when it was actually only 32%.

I think I understand how such imperfections can bother you [IMG] and where you're coming from, I really do: https://www.anxietybc.com/sites/default/files/Perfectionism.pdf
