    I recently read Tommy Nelson's book on Ecclesiastes, and I loved the style of writing. Specifically: It was consecutive or chained together. It didn't have abrupt endings, as we find in commentaries and sermon notes.


    Can you suggest any similar books for me?

    The only commentary that makes comment on every verse of Scripture is that of John Gill's works. Perhaps that will be of help to you.

    How about the Life of St. Paul by James Stalker? It's a public domain E- book that I got for free on Amazon. Another one I enjoyed which is more historical is Life in the Roman World of Nero and St. Paul. This is also another public domain freebee E - book.

    Give Ralph F. Wilson a try on JesusWalk.com
    He teaches you how to study while leading you through the scriptures.
    I've often used his materials in bible studies; not too heavy, not too light.
    Try his material first without having to buy, by signing up for his daily e-mail Bible studies

    One of the best ways to study the bible is to study the bible rather than study what others have said. If you were discipled, part of that program should have been a few hours on how to study the bible. Tools you will need to begin that adventure are a good English Dictionary, an Exhaustive Concordance for your study bible (NASB, NKJV, LEB) and one or more Bible Dictionaries. Once you have sunk your teeth into the bible proper, then the commentaries will help you to understand the controversies such as End Times, and whether we can change the outcome of our lives and those of our loved ones.

    Let me ask a different question (and if I don't get decent responses, maybe I'll make it a separate thread)...

    I'm trying to prepare myself for studying systematic theologies. So, I'm thinking I should get books that will give me a pretty-good understanding of:

    Bible Stories
    Timelines / Events
    Doctrines

    Can you suggest any books that address any of these?

    Book of Tobit. ----> Sadducees only had 5 scripture and in mockery of Jesus and Pharisees who had more scripture present the mocking story of A woman who was married 7 times the story of Tobit.

    Well what Jesus Christ considered Holy scripture includes the Book of Tobit. Apocryphal work. Which the Sadducees are challenging. In the Book of Tobit plot, Sarah was married 7 times "in the plot". (spoilers8)

    To attempt to keep this thread on track, please do not let it wander off into the extent of the canon. The possibility that the Sadducees' testing of Jesus in Matthew 16 is based on Tobit is dealt with in any number of commentaries and other works that can be referenced.
