    From another thread:

So what is the reason why evangelicals - including Baptists have a divorce rate similar to non-believers?

    1.) Life is difficult.
2.) We do not have many churches out there that train their membership how to do the commands of Jesus, which aids in the transformation of the character.
3.) We have a dominant culture that de-values marriage and has reduced it to a civil contract.

Are our pastors giving sufficient pre and post marital counseling?
    What would you recommend.?

    They don't.

    "
“Christians divorce at roughly the same rate as the world!”

It's one of the most quoted stats by Christian leaders today. And it's perhaps one of the most inaccurate.

At bottom, it is used to explain that Christians are not doing well in living out their faith. But it could also be taken as a statement that redemption by and real discipleship under Jesus makes no real difference when it comes to marriage. But mainstream sociologists would tell us that taking one's faith very seriously—in word and deed—does indeed make a marked positive difference in the health and longevity of marriage. Based on the best data available, the divorce rate among Christians is significantly lower than the general population.

    Here's the truth…

People who seriously practice a traditional religious faith—whether Christian or other—have a divorce rate markedly lower than the general population.
The factor making the most difference is religious commitment and practice.

What appears intuitive is true. Couples who regularly practice any combination of serious religious behaviors and attitudes—attend church nearly every week, read their bibles and spiritual materials regularly; pray privately and together; generally take their faith seriously, living not as perfect disciples, butserious disciples—enjoy significantly lower divorce rates than mere church members, the general public, and unbelievers."

I have tried to think of many ways to say this without sounding arrogant or snarky. But this is the best I could come up with. I am not so concerned with the rate of divorce among other church goers versus non church goers, as I am that the divorce rate in my house stays at zero percent. And if everyone had that attitude, I think the divorce rate among the population would decline.

That may be the answer - most Evangelicals do NOT seriously practice their faith.

    AKA - Sunday only Christians

Part of it started with pastors that found girl friends and went looking for reasons to believe in divorce. Saw this back in the 70's in some conservative churches.

So if Christians would just do what they are supposed to do, Obey God, then the issues of the world would be addressed? Novel idea. I've said the same thing about the abortion rate and the every other issue rate. It is what it is because Christians have lost their love and aren't making disciples who obey everything God commands.
