Donald Trump, taking an idea from his daughter, registered Democrat Ivanka Trump, will propose that new mothers be given six weeks of mandatory paid maternity leave. The six weeks paid leave will be funded by "eliminating fraud from the unemployment insurance program".

I thought Democrats were the ones that keep giving away free stuff to buy votes. Oh wait, Trump IS a Democrat.

Brilliant idea to counter abortion. Yes, I believe money is often the motivation. Plus, a great way to help soothe the upcoming rejection to the SCOTUS reversing Wade vs Roe decisions after Trump is elected and makes his appointments.

...and NICE strategy to counter the Dem's constant offers to appease the free stuff mentality!

    That Trump! He's a thinker!!

This time, it's a matter of trying to pander Hillary supporters and pick them off one by one and the daughter's influence but this idea is not that heretical to the GOP. Rubio had the same idea for the paid leave and he was popular with women because of these things in the primaries.

How will it be paid for? From an article in the Wall Street Journal by Ivanka Trump:

Finally, under the Trump plan, the federal government will guarantee, for the first time, six weeks of paid maternity leave. This will be done by amending the existing unemployment insurance that companies are required to carry. The enhancement will triple the average paid leave that new mothers receive, and it will do so without raising taxes.

Ahh, I see. So this is a federalized plan. A new federal program to dispense an entitlement. That is so Democratic Party.

What kind of witchcraft is it that will pay out 3X in benefits without raising taxes? The current federal unemployment tax rate is 0.6% and is capped. I presume that the tax rate will be increased and/or the cap will be removed.

Do you believe all entitlements from the Federal government are bad and should be abolished?

That right there is how they will pay it without taxes: charge the employer more.

"Charge the employer more" = tax increase.

    Doesn't it?

No, not all. But most of them. Certainly any new ones. Considering the national debt and deficit spending there is no other way to look at the issue.

Then it's not about entitlements per se, but what an individual's personal opinion is as to what should be provided and what should not.

It would, however if the employer's overall tax is reduced through new tax laws, which is what Trump says he will do, then even though this particular tax may increase by a small portion, overall the employer will be paying less taxes with a Trump tax plan. It's boils down to moving some numbers around for the greater good.

Yep, and if history is any guide the Democrats would go for the unemployment tax increase to fund maternity leave and block the corporate tax rate reductions.

An increase in the unemployment tax would have a slight effect of discouraging hiring since any new hire would be more expensive. Especially for start-ups or companies that are still showing a net loss.

It is a bad idea because government should never be the solution for our day to day activities.
