It is a shame when a man in a position of responsibility attacks fellow believers in Christ in a worse manner than the infidels attack. :(

That Baptist Calvinists are not really Baptist, but Presbyterian.

Nobody could honestly suggest a person who believes in believers baptism, dispensational return of Christ, autonomy of the local church and congregational government is a Presbyterian. Shame!

Actually, the "news" article contains very little from Patterson and is mostly an anti-Calvinist screed from Rick Patrick.

I don't find Patterson's clarification to be backpedaling much.

"What I did say was about myself. I said that if I held Presbyterian beliefs, I would be a Presbyterian. If I held charismatic beliefs, I would probably affiliate with the Assemblies of God. If my only difference with Presbyterians were that I favored only baptism of adult believers rather than the baptism of infants, I would probably be conflicted, but I might affiliate with Primitive Baptists. I asked no one else to respond this way. I expressed what I would do just as every Baptist is free to do and especially as is our custom in the academic world."

Why would a seminary president exhibit such apparent ignorance? He apparently knows very little about Presbyterianism or Primitive Baptists to make such a statement. Although "I asked no one else to respond this way," it sure looks like advice for Reformed Baptists to go elsewhere.

Lots of problems with the article.

First it is stated that Baptist should hold to a calvinist view of salavation, because the Anabaptists didnt. Which isnt true. Arguably the very first Anabaptists held to a reformed view of salvation. They came form the school of Zwingli under the leadership of Conrad Grebel. The Anabaptists were birthed with the reformed view.

Second issue is that "calvinists " are billed as the enemy with the "trojan horse" comment. It is implied that they want to change the form of church government within the SBC which is complete non-sense. He also stokes the fear that calvinists are going to take away belivers baptism. Again, a foolish arguement.

Another issue, is the claim that drinking a beer is a sin. Scripture does not support that claim, not even in the case of a pastor having a beer, wine....whatever.

It is clear they feel the SBC is pullign away from dispensationlism, which they are not happy. This is theological system foreign to the Anabaptist movement during the radical reformation. The same group that Patterson attempted to appeal to for authority earlier in thr article. I'm

There is also a ton of SBC views that don't match what was historic Anabaptist doctrine. The Anabaptist Servetus denied the the trinity. So by Patterson's logic, triniatrians have no business being a SB. He has no business appealing to Anabaptist view has authoritative in anyway. Their views were too diverse, nor will you find one group that matches SBC doctrine found in the faith and message.

Of course you have the absurd comparison that TCassidy points out. There is others, but I have typed enough.

I am aware the Rick said most of the stuff, but Patterson comments are taken as an endorsement of everything said prior to him speaking.

The only thing that most Calvinistic Baptists like myself share with the Presby Christians would be their view on 5 points of grace/salvation proper!

But even in his "clarification" he said, "Let me go further and say that I am fully aware that Baptists have historically been divided into two camps (at least)—namely, Calvinist and non-Calvinist."

Uh, well, actually, no! Historically Baptists have been either Particular Baptists or General Baptists. Historically most Particular Baptists avoided the term "Calvinism" simply because it was inaccurate concerning most doctrines held dear by Baptists and because it engendered so much strife.

He goes on to say, "I said that if I held Presbyterian beliefs, I would be a Presbyterian." Except Particular Baptists do not hold Presbyterian beliefs. And he cannot honestly say that was not the context in which he made his divisive remarks. We hold Baptist beliefs. And if he does not understand and acknowledge that fact he needs to step down.

He sounds like he wants to have calvinists within the Baptist camp go away, and also those who do not agree pre trib/pre mil position!

He just seems to be indirectly attacking those of us who are calvinist ans also Baptists, as his wish would be that we just goaway and join Presby, or Reformed church... Reformed Baptists such as Spurgeon would begiven the right boot of disfellowship!

I think you need to go back and reread. Your characterization is not what was said.

As an alumnus of Southwestern Seminary, the account that Patterson gives about students rudely walking out rings true to me.

    His explanation sounds quite reasonable.

Full Disclosure: I am not fan of Patterson, but characterizing his comments as an attack sounds like grasping at straws. I don't embrace Reformed Theology, but I am much more Calvinistic than many who have been raised in SBC circles.

Sorry but you have this situation wrong here. What was spoken of was this younger generation of the "New Calvinism". It was also explained that what is being pushed by the young "New Calvinists" is many presy doctrines contrary to Baptist doctrines. What was said was in that context. Any attempt to paint it any other way is just wrongheaded.

Catholics believe God loves everyone. God even loves the Devil, doesn't love what the devil does with his will.

You can't get kicked out the catholic church, You can get excommunicated, that is denied communion.
