Southern Baptist bureaucrats eye Moody's historic Northfield property as centerpiece for an evangelistic push into the Northeast U.S.

This comes just as the SBC is disposing of one of its two large conference centers, Glorieta in New Mexico:

Catholics End Up with Moody Property

"Thomas Aquinas College....received the campus as a gift from the National Christian Foundation. It will officially take ownership May 2."

"The chapel on campus will be converted to a Catholic church with the addition of an altar, confessionals and kneelers, McLean said."

"The deeply religious family that owns Hobby Lobby purchased the campus for $100,000 and invested millions of dollars into it while planning to transfer it to a Christian institution. Possible candidates mentioned over the years included a new college named for C. S. Lewis, Grand Canyon University, the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board, Olivet University, Azusa Pacific University and Liberty University"

Moody is turning over in his grave, as doubt that he liked a church denying wht he taught getting it now!

I am unfamiliar with the transaction and confused. The 2nd post says the Northfield Campus was given to Grand Canyon University. Then the 3rd post says that Thomas Aquinas College ended up with the property. Could you explain? Thanks.

Deal for Northfield campus falls through

"[Grand Canyon University] pulled out of the deal last month, citing financial and accreditation concerns."

"The billionaire Green family of Oklahoma, which owns a chain of craft stores called Hobby Lobby, bought the [historic D. L. Moody Northfield conference] property in 2009 for $100,000. The family has since invested about $5 million to restore buildings and clean up the campus."

"Spending a large sum of money to upgrade the campus is one thing. But it’s another to do that without even knowing whether the university will pass accreditation standards in New England, where accrediting agencies are especially tough"

"It will be wonderful for the town and the county if the small Catholic college can establish itself on a campus whose roots reach back to the Northfield Seminary for Young Ladies — which was established by popular Protestant evangelist Dwight L. Moody in 1879, but has lain vacant for the past 12 years."

"The liberal arts college in Santa Paula, Calif., is to be given the core campus on May 2, changing hands from the National Christian Foundation, which has overseen the property since 2012."

"The foundation has vetted Thomas Aquinas both for its commitment to continuing Moody’s legacy of Christian-based education but also, more practically, its financial ability to maintain a second campus — something that nixed an earlier proposal to establish at college in Northfield."

"Emmitt Mitchell, a spokesman for the National Christian Foundation, said he found Thomas Aquinas to be a “highly credible group” that would carry on Moody’s legacy at the Northfield campus."
