In another thread - I stated "Not one person has died in an automobile accident - they die due to automobile collisions!"
I went on to say that I am very serious about using the term collision.
osson being is that an accident is an unfourntate event that could not be prevented.
In the case of auto collisions- over 95% ARE preventable!. Some will say- for example - "well, he was tailgating - and I had to slam on my brakes - so I couldnt help it when he hit me.

Well, generally, YES you can do something - if he is tailgating - let him pass you. Remember, if someone is going to be dumb - you then in front of you.

Virtually - any collision can be avoided - with proper defensive driving.

(BTW, I am a certified DDC instructor)

Now in addition - there are other terms I will not use -
For example - I will NOT use the term "gay" to refer to a homosexual.
I due this for two reasons.

First, the proper use of "gay" means a happy person.
Second - Homosexuals like to use the term "gay" is it sounds nicer and not so condescending.
    -
Now are there terms you will not use - and for what reasons......

I won't call CNN anything other than Communist News Network.
I agree, Homosexuals are not "gay."
"African American" is born in Africa, not Atlanta.
A SUV is not a "truck."
A firearm containing rifling in its barrel should not be called a "gun", though the term is not totally wrong.
A magazine is not a "clip" even though the Brits misused the term on occasion in military publication.
A pond is not a "lake."

A fuel powered vehicle has an engine not a motor. It has a transmission, not a "tranny".

In baseball there is no such thing as "the tie goes to the runner."

Technically, a collision occurs when two moving objects meet. A moving car cannot collide with a guardrail. It can crash into a guardrail, but not collide with it.

This is also one of my pet peeves!

    Exactaly what is an "African-American.
Is it a person born in Africa - who then comes to the United States?
If so, than would a Causician born in South Africa, be considered an "Africian-Americian"

When does a person from Africa become an A-A
    A) When he gets off the plane
    B) When he becomes a permanent resident
    C) When he becomes a Citizen.
    D) Other

    From Merriam-Webster:
    collision
implies the coming together of two or more things with such force that both or all are damaged or their progress is severely impeded

One reason I prefer to use the word collision while I teach is that I want students to realize the severity of a vehicle striking something/someone else.

So then you admit that terms mean what you want them to mean?

Oxford English dictionary: "An instance of one moving object or person striking violently against another."

Hey, I'm as staunch a prescriptive grammarian as you're likely to meet, but accident is as proper in common usage as collision. Wreck is my favorite descriptive word, which bypasses both culpability and the relative motions of the bodies.

As Jerry Fawell said - "Born-again Christian" is a redundant term!

( same thing goes for "full Stop"

Really strange when "religious writers" seem to make born again as just one group of Christians!

In UK a SUV is often called a "Chelsesa Tractor."

Hey, if it's an unintentional collision, it's an accident.
Or let me break it down. I'm driving home from the hospital after losing my father. The road's a bit slick, so I'm driving cautiously to try to avoid a traffic mishap. A person in an SUV runs a red light and crosses in front of me. Trying to avoid the other driver at that point was not an option due to reaction and the simple rules of inertia that say "objects in motion tend to stay in motion". I slammed on the brakes thinking, "Oh, THIS is going to leave a mark no matter what!"
So to the driver of the SUV, yeah, an accident. To me (when I woke up after being knocked out by the force of the impact), a collision. To both vehicles, a wreck.

Hey, I don't think so, either. When I put plates on the SUV I bought, though, the DMV rated it as a "truck"...

If I've got mice or ants or cockroaches in my house I want an exterminator, not a post control technician.
