For many years as a young man I was a member of a KJVO Fundamentalist Baptist Church - loud preaching with Sunday morning and evening services.

Prayer service and visitation service during the week.
Several monthly meetings and campaigns during the year (Missionary, Prophecy, Bible, VBS, Open air preaching, House to house visitation, etc).

I must say it was exciting and to be honest a joyful time.

I miss it and the camaraderie.

I think those days have past us by no matter the local church.

    Am I wrong?

There is a revival movement getting going among our churches. One of the leaders of the movement is my old friend Dr. Rick Flanders, an evangelist and revival historian: Dr. Rick Flanders Revival Ministries

Several of the leaders of the movement are holding one day seminars on how to have a whole hour with God every day.

Don't know if you have heard of him but Canadian Perry Rockwood (The People's Gospel Hour) was one of our favorites for Revival meetings. My wife and I helped with his radio broadcast here in the states.

He went home to the Lord May 2008.

John, would you say that reciting the Lords Prayer weekly would be formalism? Any other specific examples.

I remember when I was in Germany, in our SBC church, I was in charge of the bulletin (my Army office had a copy machine - the one where you typed on a blue sheet)
Well, one week instead of putting in the entire morning service events (prayer, song numbers, offering, ect, I simply put " Sunday School 1000 hrs, Morning service 1100 hrs, Evening Service 1900 hrs" --- My goodness the pastor blew a fuse -!!!

    Disclaimer
: when I asked my NOCIC if I could use the mimeograph machine for church bulletins -he answered "Anything for Jesus"

Yes, I'd call that formalism, since Jesus said, "Pray after this manner," not "Pray this prayer." Other formal aspects JRR opposed are: organ music during the prayer, reading a prayer, gorgeous buildings rather than utilitarian ones, "worship centers," a robed choir, emphasizing a "worship service" when the NT has no such thing (he rightly points out that worship in the NT is usually prostrating one's self), etc.

You definitely got that pastor out of his comfort zone--out of which the Lord wants us, I would say. ;)

    quoting part of JoJ's post:
When I went to BJU in 1970, I was disappointed to find they had a very formal service on Sunday mornings. All the students were required to be there, not being allowed to go to a regular church. This explains Bob Jones Jr.'s objection to JRR's book.

Things had changed when my daughter attended during the late '90s - daily chapel attendance was required but students were strongly encouraged to attend local conservative/fundamental churches on Sunday, and to serve in those churches. The same seemed to be true earlier (late '80s) when a pastor friend was at BJU, as he attended a nearby church on Sundays at that time.

The following are my observations. I've never had the opportunity to speak to any knowledgable person specifically about this matter.
    1. The school has Protestant (Methodist and Presbyterian specifically) roots. So, it didn't have the local churchness of the Baptists.
    2. When the school came to Greenville, its student body would have swamped the churches willing to identify with the school.
    3. Due to point 1, its Sunday worship style was in line with other Protestant churches. I remember my Presbyterian pastors wearing a Geneva robe on Sunday mornings.
    4. Ministerial students were encouraged to go out on "extension." My pastor and three of his classmates planted a Baptist church in Morgantown, NC.
