The House’s conservative rabble-rousers thought American voters had given them the most powerful ally imaginable in their war against the Republican establishment. And for months — as President Trump delivered daily frustrations to House Speaker Paul D. Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, they had little reason for doubt.

On Wednesday, however, Trump sent the hard right a new message: Your enemy’s enemy is not necessarily your friend.

The president’s quick embrace of a legislative strategy for a must-pass disaster relief bill proposed by the top Democratic leaders, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), set the stage for a grand negotiation later this year that will hand leverage to the minority and frustrate the majority’s governing ambitions.

If history is any guide, that likely includes any hopes conservatives had for ambitious spending cutbacks and a thorough recalibration of the federal government’s size and scope.

Outwardly, key conservative leaders blamed Ryan (Wis.) and McConnell (Ky.) for the concessions — extending the federal debt ceiling for only three months, allowing Democrats to use the threat of a government default to extract policy concessions on a spending bill that also must pass in mid-December.

“Let’s be clear,” Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, told reporters Wednesday. “There was not a conservative option on the debt ceiling that was offered to the president.”

What is amusing about all this is that the Democrats are now eager to make deals with someone that they wanted to impeach only yesterday for being another Hitler and a KKK shill--how could they cave to Trump so fast at the faintest whiff of power, huh?

Also, after a 100 years I think, isn't it time to do away with the debt ceiling as absolutely useless in stopping spending by either party? Why go through all these agonies?

On the deal that the Democrats made with Trump, I have to agree with Pat Buchannan that Trump for practical reasons such as Irma and Harvey needed to get a deal and his own party leaders were no help.

Buchannan wrote one thing that really struck me because it is true that the members of Congress are too weak to do anything to stand up to the White House and the Supreme Court. He wrote: "In the days of Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, Congress was a rival to even strong presidents. Those days are long gone."

Comparing Trump to Christ is one of the dumbest things that I have read on this site in a long time.

Ya gotta love Trumpies. Their take on the debt ceiling deal--the Democrats caved!

Someone doesn't understand what the debt ceiling is.

The House had already passed a clean hurricane relief bill, no riders about the debt ceiling attached. Attaching the debt ceiling is something the Senate wanted. Getting the shortest time delay, 3 months, is what the Dems wanted and that is what Trump gave them.

Wait a minute. I thought the GOP RINOs were frustrating Trump's agenda. Isn't that "standing up to the President"?

Trump just took a page from McCain's playbook. To see Trump folks scramble to make it an issue of sticking it to the RINOs is funny. Truth is you elected a liberal democrat that pretended to be conservative. You made your bed with the dogs and now can't complain about the fleas.

Just think, you could of had a real conservative in office. Even honorable Jeff Sessions can't save Trump's image. SMH

I think it's more a matter of doing the right thing than who sides with who. President Trump is just trying to get things done. If, on occasion, the Democrats blindly stumble into doing the right thing also, so much better for them. Republicans and Democrats are not inherently opposed on every issue.

Kennedy was a Democrat. But he was idealistically similar to Reagan who was a Republican.

I've got a riddle: what do you get when Democrats win the presidential election? An Obamination!

Yeah, it fits better that the Dems have been calling Trump another Hitler since the election and they, being leftists nowadays, are another Stalin, who made a deal with Hitler, as you know. Conservatives just don't have the votes at this time.

The Never-Trumpers are scattered through both political parties and vary in their political identification. From a political point of view, the undocumented Democrats like McCain can stall the American people forever. Do you think that the Democrats will honestly make more deals with Trump? Do the Democrats favor deep tax cuts--no. Do the Democrats favor ending cheap labor and crooked voting--no.
