Was talking to a fella today who attends a Baptist church, but he is NOT a member and refused to join. Reason being, he will not put himself under the authority of any man.
He said that he only comes under the authority of Jesus Christ.

He says he has scripture to back up his belief, but did not give the passage.

Have you ever heard of such a belief - if so- what Scripture would they be using?

I would ask him if he were under the authority of the police. Or a judge. Or the president. Or his boss at work. Or any man made law.

I would go on, but I think the point is made.

Yes. It is called "rebellion." Against God. Against His word. And against His appointed leadership.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

1 Corinthians 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

I've seen this quite often. Kingdom work is not personal ministries - we all fall under the authority of a local congregation or our "ministry" is of us and not of God. To deny this is, as @TCassidy pointed out, rebellion against God. This happens, I believe, because we want things our way.

I can think of scripture against but not for his point. As Cassidy said, he is in rebellion. My question would be , why? Is he just a stubborn person? Has he been the victim of abusive leadership. I have been in a church that became corrupt. It was a good church when I got there. Ledership changed and a bunch of unGodly snakes took over. No way I would have submitted to them.

I'm curious about the thread title "Under Church Discipline"

Is he rejecting discipline, claiming he's not a member?

Or is he being considered for discipline because he refuses to join in membership?

From what I understand, no discipline is being considered.

It was just a discussion. From what I understand he does not hold any position in the chu
I was just taken back when he told me the reason he refuses to join a church .

I've known a few people like that, and it has nothing to do with Scripture. Most likely you will find he is using {Insert his name} 1:1.

Possibly he was burnt in the past by "church leaders", possibly unfairly?

How can you be considered for discipline when you are not a member?

I don't know. I was just grasping at straws trying to connect the thread title with the thread content

Maybe I should have put a question mark after the thread title.
The connection - is why he refused to join - he does not want to be under the authority of any man - which in his opinion - would include a church.

One thing is for sure EWT (and I'm sure you are aware) He will do righteously.

I personally don't know...there is too much bad experience that I just don't know. Can the Lord withdraw from full area and allow for so much evil and pain?

I could respond with .... alright, I often take my dog for walks and along the way I meet people who I sometimes chat with. I hibitually
Inquire how God is working in their lives... I generally get very odd looks... sometimes with a very impassioned story, generally not complementary! Tell you the truth, it's disconcerting. I ask myself, could they all be in rebellion or could it be a survival tactic? You tell me.

Just found out this man normally attends that Baptist church- (and will not join) and has a Bible Study
at his house on Monday nights - but the Bible study is not a ministry of the church -

I've lived in different areas of country (and the world). It is different in different places. I have lived in places where it was considered odd to speak to people you didn't know as you passed by. I've lived in places where it would be rude not to speak. I can't say what the reasons are that you are met with resistance as I do not know the culture in which you live. But your church does as they are a part of your environment, and that is probably the best place to explore answers to the question.

The Kingdom of God is not something that enters into people, but rather something that people enter into. It is the rule and authority of God in our lives, and it is expressed in the form of the local church. We are members of a body, not individuals working to get to Heaven.
