MOSCOW -- A new Russian memorial to fabled gun maker Mikhail Kalashnikov unveiled with pomp this week is hurriedly being modified by its sculptor after a rifle depicted on the ensemble was found to be a likeness of a rifle developed by the Nazis.

The Russian Military History Society, which is chaired by Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky, announced on September 22 that it would remove the offending section after it was identified online as a likeness of the German StG44 selective-fire rifle developed during World War II.

No, it isn't. It is clearly an AK-47. The two are similar but the one on the statue is unmistakably an AK.

Note the differences. The AK is mostly flat on top while the StG is not.

The StG has a protruding operating rod our the front of the gas cylinder and the AK does not.

The forward end of the StG gas cylinder is vertical and the forward end of the AK gas cylinder is at an angle.

The lower plaque, which contains many other rifles, is not part of the monument. And the Soviets made a copy of the StG 44 in East Germany until 1962.

More fake news from an anti-Russian web site. :(

Article says "a rifle depicted on the ensemble was found to be a likeness of a rifle developed by the Nazis."
    and
"The errant German rifle that was spotted only two days after the unveiling is not the one clasped by Kalashnikov on his pedestal but, rather one in a group of rifles embedded in a separate metalwork sculpture integral to the composition that stands behind the statue."

Apparently the gun in question is the one in the lower right hand corner of the collage of metalwork guns seen in the video at the 58-59 second mark. There is also a photo and a diagram embedded in the article but I couldn't see the photo/diagram until I opened the article in a different browser (Chrome.) Here is that photo:

Yes, there is no doubt it is an Stg 44, but it is more likely it is the Soviet manufactured clone produced in East Germany until the early 1960s.

Just like the Chinese Norinco Type 56 is an AK-47 clone.

Or, closer to home, the Bushmaster XM-15-A2 is a Colt AR-15 clone.

It is almost impossible, just looking at it from a distance, to tell if it is an original of German manufacture or a Soviet clone.

I have an Colt M-16 clone made in the Philippines.

I also have a Colt AR-15 clone made by Mossberg.

And, technically, the Colt AR-15 is also a clone of the original Armalite Model 10. :)

I think the problem is the status is to honor designs by Kalashnikov, not to honor commie block copies of German rifles.

Looks more like an AK-74. Another Kalashnikov design circa 1970.

The magazine release button identifies it as an AK-74 clone, not an AK-47 clone.

Well I intend on getting one, from somewhere, sometime before Nov 2020. Know what I'm saying? :)
