Scriptural way for missions

    There are several forms of financially supporting missions.

    1) Cooperative missions - as with the SBC
    2) Part of the Church budget
    3) Faith Promise - giving by members - over and above their church offering.
    4) Fully supporting a missionary who is a member of your church.
    5) Other ??

    Do you think that Scripture requires only one form of financial assistance for missionaries,
    or is simply up to the church?

    If it is up to the church - how would decide with route to go with?

    If its a Baptist church, form a committee. I told the other deacons in a meeting "these committees have become assanine. You do realize that we now have a committee to form committees?". Several years ago house and grounds asked me to be on the committee. I said "nope, I could fix the stuff in less time than y'all take talking about how to fix it."

    As long as the missionary is sent out from a local body, I don't think the Bible places restrictions on how they are financed.

    Off the top of my head, I think of Paul. He was a tentmaker to finance himself, yet he received monetary help from local churches.

    Today, I am not against mission boards or cooperatives, as long as those running the boards also finance themselves, and do not take a percentage away from the missionaries.

    In my opinion, a missionary board should be a kind of "support insurance" in case some of the missionary's support drops.

    I've held that missions':
    proper goal is the carrying out the Great Commission by
    preaching the Gospel thus seeing souls saved.
    discipling these new Christians by planting NT churches.    ​
    proper focus in the local church
    as the sending agency.
    as the funding agency (while I give designated amounts to certain missionaries it's through my local church).    ​
    I have no problems with mission boards which see themselves as services to the various local churches.

    Several years ago, I was involved in a church plant. The missionary pastor came thur Galilean Baptist MIssions. Their policy was that the missionary receive 100% of support sent. ( ie none was deducted for the mission board.) However, the church plant was to send 10% of undesignated funds to support the mission board.

    I was informed by our missionary pastor, that many boards - do take a % of the missionaries support to finance the home office.

    FYI - about a year later Galilean Baptists Missions merged with the Fellowship of Baptists for Home Missions.

    It is exampled in the NT that when that local church was deficient that an individual stepped forward to make up the difference.

    I have no problem with individuals contributing to both organized efforts of a group or that which the missionary considers is the leading of God.

    What I DO most certainly have a problem with is anyone taking from the contributions any portion for their own support without the knowledge and consent of both the person who gave and the person who was the intended recipient.

    That INCLUDES the typical "cooperative" mission efforts of the SBC.
