Cane or Able

    A bit more then a week ago, my wife had her knee replaced.

    She is walking well without the walker, so there came the question. Should we get her a cane so, if she is accidentally bumped this Sunday, it gives her more stability?

    Those of you who have had joint replacement experience, what is your thinking?

    Should she do without cane if able?

    But in seriousness, my Father(both knees) and Father inlaw(hip) have went through joint replacements. Get the cane. Better safe than sorry.

    It depends on the cane, really. Some are not sturdy and can cause an accident quicker than a fall. Ask your doctor which cane would suit her and if home-health will pay for someone to come and give her therapy in using it steadily. Just sticking a cane in someone's hands isn't going to automatically work.

    For Pete's sake, it's just a walking stick to help one keep their balance. Use the cane.

    As a knee replacement recipient, I would definitely recommend a cane. I used one until I was walking good enough that my wife could see no hint of a limp. Works wonders for that little bump by a bystander that you would never notice till now - get it and have her learn to use it properly! Good luck!

    My wife will have to have knee replacement someday... When we think of a cane we see a single support but I have seen some and you can check for yourself that have four extended feet... It is usually made of Aluminum and it may give her better balance... Look into an Aluminum Quad Walking Cane... Hope this was helpful... Brother Glen:)

    I’ve seen those. They look a lot better then a walking stick, and that will help me.

    The stick reminds me of the club uses to get me out of the recliner when I remind her that I am in my reclining years. :)

    I am amazed at the recovery rate she has had.

    It is definitely painful, and rehab is not Sunday school, but she is determined. That is the basic key to her success.

    She’s discussing cane type with the rehab folks as I type.

    Dad, 93, uses one of these as needed, some days better than others. Me, I've had both my heels crushed with screws and brackets in both feet now, and am well acquainted with long periods of convalescing and wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, canes, and walking sticks. I don't go anywhere without a cane or a walking stick these days, good day or bad.

    There are two songs that are hard to sing if you pitch them to high... Here In The Vineyard and Master The Tempest Is Raging... We tried the last one with a small congregation and strained our voices... Master The Tempest Is Raging if you are familiar with it climbs, and climbs, and climbs, and climbs... Sung it once and that was enough... Never heard it requested in a 5th Sunday Meeting or an Association... I too have the Acapella website... Nothing like the oldies and goodies... Brother Glen:)

    I have used a cane for almost 25 years. Even though most of the time I could walk well without it. However, my car has Disabled Person license plates and getting out my cane to walk away saves a lot of explaining that I really am disabled. Also people see the cane and tend to give me more room so avoid being bumped and jostled, or even being knocked down.

    Tell her to use it. She earned it. :)
