Falwell Jr. Chooses a 'True Christian' to Deliver 2018 Commencement Address

"Liberty University is proud to announce that former President Jimmy Carter will deliver the keynote address at Commencement on Saturday, May 19, 2018."

Jerry Falwell Jr. met President and Mrs. Carter early last year. "It is one of the greatest honors of my life to welcome President Carter to our Commencement stage. I have tremendous respect for him as a statesman and a true Christian....President Carter, both during his time in office and since, has followed the teachings of Christ by serving the poor and loving his neighbors. I am thrilled that he will be sharing the story of his life of faith in action to our graduates and their families."

"Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981....In 1982, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, established The Carter Center, a non-profit organization focused on resolving conflict; advancing democracy and human rights; preventing diseases; and improving mental health care. 'I am pleased to speak at Liberty University’s Commencement,' Carter said. 'I look forward to reaching out to this young generation of future leaders. I hope to inspire them as so many have inspired me throughout my life.'"

Didn't think it was possible, but I now have less respect for LU than I did a minute ago.

Wow, very interesting. Carter was opposed by Falwell Sr. back in the 80s and Falwell took a lot of heat over it. Carter was the Southern Baptist Sunday School teacher running against the divorced Hollywood actor in Reagan. But Reagan had the more righteous politics, and Falwell believed it was all about policy.

Not sure what prompted this. Carter has actually defended Trump recently, believe it or not. But he's definitely not my first choice. Still holds all his old liberal views and all the new ones. Hope it goes well.

Jimmy Carter was a terrible President. As a Christian, he is way too liberal for me. I have met him and talked to him. I have heard him teach Sunday school a few times. He has a huge heart. He loves people. I honestly think his liberalism and most of his Presdential failures stem from his desire to find good in people. He just does not want to believe anyone is bad or evil.

Yeah, I remember reading some of his speeches from his time as a governor, and have come to the same opinion.

Probably one of the worst Presidents in US history and likely the worst ex-President of all time. Still, the university learning experience should not have a totally homogenous curriculum and outlook and Carter speaking at Liberty University is a coup for them.

Good people don't need Christ or His cross.

Did I say I agreed with him? I am simply explaining to you why he thinks and acts the way he does.

He's probably the best example I can give on why Christians shouldn't care whether a politician is a Christians or not. It has very little bearing on the job they might do.

Exactly what Falwell did in the 80s. Thank God that's what many Christians did last election.

As I like to say when I have to "defend" my vote for Trump, I didn't vote for his personality. I voted for his platform.

As did I. That said, I don't hate Trump either. There are many things about him I like. There are many positions changes he's made over the years I like. And I love the way he fights the left.

I don't hate him either, but he does talk too much.

Does he? I actually don't know not being with him close to him to gauge. The media will play something on an endless loop if they don't like it. Perhaps you're saying he makes too many ill-advised comments. Yes, I'm sure that's true, but he's also making some fantastic comments that few politicians would make. When trying to be bold and do good things, something you slip with some inarticulate things.

I don't do twitter myself, but check his often. It's a way to get the news directly from him. I think his tweets are 99% fantastic. Only a few have fallen short, IMO.

If former President Carter is, as he says he is, our brother in Christ, then that relationship is of greater importance than his political leanings because it is literally established in the blood of Christ Jesus.

To be clear, you can be a Christian and be wrong about a lot of stuff if you believe that you personally are a sinner, saved by grace.
