California Baptist University partners with Red Skelton Foundation for Bachelors Degree in Comedic Arts:

This Cal Baptist University major is a laughing matter – Press Enterprise

"Cal Baptist, located in Riverside, is one of three universities in the United States with a major in Comedic Arts and the only one on the West Coast or with a Christian focus to the degree, said John Pate, who launched the program in fall 2016."

Students "agree to perform clean comedy. Christianity is a focus, given the university’s mission statement as a 'Christ-centered educational experience.' One of the required courses in the 36-unit major is 'Comedy in Christian Ministries'....ministers...could do their job much better if they had better stage presence...Pate said."

    Corban University—Farming

Will be "the only private Christian college with an agricultural program west of the Rockies....Agribusiness will be offered as a concentration under the Hoff School of Business....The university completed a feasibility report on building the new school in 2016, and recently purchased an additional 78 acres contiguous to campus....The ultimate goal...is for Corban to introduce its own college of agricultural studies, with full majors in agribusiness, agricultural science and agricultural missions"

While the CBU degree is in the same category as Underwater Mayan Basket Weaving. The Corban is one I would have thought would have been around for years. I'm thinking especially in the realm of "agricultural missions."

Bryan College, a fundamentalist school in Tennessee, announces new undergraduate program in the martial arts:

Martial Arts Academy - Bryan College

"Bryan College’s Martial Arts Academy is a leadership development program designed to provide students with a balanced mix of martial arts training and spiritual formation. Beginning in the fall of 2018, students in this four-year program will have the opportunity to work towards a black belt in Isshinryu karate or their 1st and 2nd degree. Students will receive credit for their training and have opportunities to compete annually in weapons kata, empty hand kata, and point fighting**. In addition to martial arts training, students will develop a biblical worldview as well as the ability to think and communicate well to others."

This doesn't look like a major, but simply classes for credit. Similar programs have been around a long time. In the early '70s I took judo and karate for credit at BJU. To the best of my knowledge, they were the first in this area. There were also BJU sponsored evangelistic teams that used the martial arts in demonstrations, Karate for Christ and Judo Gentlemen.

Then at Tennessee Temple there was a program offering the Chinese martial arts ("kung fu") for credit. I taught in that program, and we also had an evangelism team, Kung Fu for Christ.

Meanwhile, at Maranatha Baptist College they had a jujutsu program in the '70's. I worked out with them once, and those crazy people went out and ran barefoot in the snow!

That sounds like something the sensei Max Andrews would do.

Yep, that's who it was. Confused Then, since I knew both karate and judo, he had me spar all of his students in both those disciplines, "so they could gain experience." I was absolutely exhausted and sore. :Frown

Just for the record, the Bryan karate program mentions 4 years and also gaining a black belt. The 4 years in that case is not the time needed to complete a major, since the program is not listed as a major. It is the usual time considered to be necessary to earn a first degree black belt.
