Mrs Salty wants to give her computer to a friend. But she wants to erase everything off the
hard drive. Is it possible to do that?

    Any recommendation welcomed

It is possible to erase it to the point no ordinary person could recover it. Delete all your files and run a file shredder. Since I use Mcaffee on my network, I use their shredder.

bleachbit.org is an open source software program that does a good job of removing programs from a hard drive. However, sort of physically destroying a hard drive there is always the possibility of accessing deleted files. It takes sophisticated tools to do it.

My point is you can't erase everything on the hard drive. You need to leave the operating system on there if Mrs. Salty wants her friend to be able to use the computer.

If you have the original disk for the operating system you could erase everything on the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. But get ready for hours of security updates to download and possibly the need to download a bunch of drivers
