If the cat was never trained it is a difficult time to begin training it.

I’m not a cat person; I’ve had allergies to them since high school.

I know what I’d do...

Cats don't take correction, especially at 4 years of age. The correction I would make would be to remove it from my household and take it to an animal shelter.

Outdoor cat?

When we bought our house (farmhouse) in Maine it came with a family of cats in one of the barns.

Somehow they survived the brutal Maine winters. They were not approachable.

 

Perhaps your only option is to let Buddy outside so he can do his business. If that does not work you do indeed have a serious problem on your hands - cats just do not take instructions well.

 

LOL we tried to get them in but they wouldn't come to us even if we offered food.

 

Speaking of Maine winters. Years ago a boot company had a great commercial on the radio. You hear an old Maine farmer going on about how tough a life he had, but his boots always saw him through. He relates how a Maine state land surveyor had arrived to tell him there was a problem with his house and land. The state official said the new survey showed his house was really in NH and not in Maine as he had long believed, but the rest of his property was indeed in Maine. The old man thought about it for a minute, turned to the state official and said in that clear Maine accent: "Thank God I don't have to go through another Maine winter!"

 

TCassidy is correct, our lone boy uses 2 boxes, side by side, but prefers outside. Anywhere the new cat has done anything requires cleaning with an odor eliminator. Having more fun by the minute, eh? Next you will need to get a handheld blacklight to show up anything you have missed, so you can clean that too. I have no idea if this will work, but the cat guy on animal planet says so. The cats in our barn in Maine were feral animals going back several generations.

So they had adapted to the Maine environment. One good thing - Not many rodents in the barn.

 

I never heard that a cat does not like to go #1 and #2 in the same box. We have had cats for years (always just one at a time) and we have had only one box - with no complaints about it either.

 

Besides the feral cats we had in our barns in Maine we had domestic cats, Siamese and Maine Coon Cats which we bred and sold.

Right about the complaints, we had one LARGE box, one of the Siamese cats said that it was OK with him and the others as long as someone changed it everyday.

Otherwise - watch where you step... oops.

 

We had several cats staying in in bad weather, & going out when they wanted, they started life as barn cats here, so we had a couple of boxes. Then as they died off from old age we just kept the two boxes going for the last guy who is a 16 yr old prolific hunter, & about the size of a Maine Coon. He rarely uses the boxes unless the snow is bad outside, but when he does, he keeps his business separate. We have 10 acres of prime hunting territory for him, & he defends it from neighborhood marauders to this day. He is enjoying life by the woodstove these days & only stays out long enough to get a snack & use the bathroom. A perfect cat.

 

I've got the purrrfect cat. She's completely trained and stays where I tell her.
