Watching a rerun of "Good Times"
The grandfather came to visit, however, he also brought his girlfriend.
It was their intention to share a room that night.
However, Florida (Mom) being the good Christian woman she is -
would not allow that in her home.
Gram pa said the reason they did not get married was because
both of their Social Securities would be cut.
Eventually, mom caved and allowed them to share a bedroom.

I think marriage should be a matter handled in the Church. It should not be a government issue.

But that doesnt answer the question. Nothing was said about the
    State/Commonwealth preforming the marriage.

In fact, if they did have a wedding, I'm sure that the Mom -would have scheduled a church wedding.

A documented vow should be made before God and man.
If the vows are broken then the state should be brought in.

Whether the state is involved I don't see any scriptural evidence.
Today the state is involved for everyone's legal protection especially children.

I have vasalated on this issue

I believe the government is no longer “by and for the people”.

Our government is for government (for itself) and a money-making institutation designed to shift money to the pet projects of its rulers.

Marriage is a religious institution, something our government has turned away from.

The marriage was registered with the state, or this discussion would mot be happening.

This is just like that other thread, IMO.
Marriage is about doing what God commands and is a covenant between one man and one woman for life.

Money should never even enter into the equation, because God can and does provide for His children.
As for unbelievers, they're not beholden to obey anything that God commands, as they are in rebellion to Him and His ways.

I'm not sure why anyone here should have trouble with this subject, as obedience to God should be more important than any financial ramifications.

What Marriage!!!! that is what this OP is about -the fact that there was no marriage.

So PLEASE answer the posted question !!!!!

THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION AS TO WHO OR WHAT HAS THE AUTHORITY TO PREFORM A WEDDING.

The mom would then be as guilty of fornication as the children are. When we accept the sin of others we are helping them to sin. We should love the sinner as God does but we are to reject the sin.

I dunno. I don't see any question at all. I see, "open for discussion" in the OP. No question was asked.

I agree actually; a marriage is a legal contract and with it comes legal rights with out which no one would have legal responsibilities. To me Marriage is the act of becoming one flesh with your spouse. The best way I know of staying married is to think of your spouse as your self.
The fact that Government is for it's self is because the people don't wish to be involved/ Not even half of eligible voters voted. I suspect the next president may just be communist. What then? If you think things are bad now you haven't seen nothing yet. If you feel like you are being manipulated, you are by the media
I'd still rather be here than any where else in the world.

NO - you did not answer the question! Your answer was "The marriage was registered with the state, or this discussion would mot be happening."

The OP stated there was no marriage - so could you have answered the OP?

Then, would it be OK in this case to be married via a religious rite but not registered secularly?
(This Q is for the thread, especially since several seem in favor of your point in some form.)

Scamming the government. The law was written to help widows and widowers.

Yes, I have come to believe Christian marriage should be done independent of State.

Your entire thread was about Civil marriage causing financial penalty that caused 2 people to not get married. Are you slow or being intentionally disagreeable? I am going to just stay out of your thread because I am obviously not welcome in it.

    Financial Reasons Seniors Cohabit
"In general, you cannot receive survivors benefits if you remarry before the age of 60 unless the latter marriage ends, whether by death, divorce, or annulment. If you remarry after age 60 (50 if disabled), you can still collect benefits on your former spouse's record. When you reach age 62 or older, you may get retirement benefits on the record of your new spouse if they are higher."
    Source: Social Security Administration

    LInk for this info:

More info about loosing benefits if a senior couple

Notice: I am not condoning co-habitation -but just point out the reality of this issue.

    So what should happen?

whether it is civil marriage or religious marriage - the results are the same.
The point is in the sitcom -(as stated in the OP) the couple never got married - either civil or religious
