Are there any statistics about whether most Baptists are creationists or evolutionists? Has any census been taken recently in regards to this topic? It would be very interesting to find out, but I couldn't really find anything about it online.

I don't know of any statistics, but certainly many Baptists are creationists. Like me! :)

Reminds me of a story: I had a psychology professor teaching about (trying to sell) Darwinism and made the comment many Christians were evolutionists. I shook my head and she looked at me and said it was true but I corrected her and said “Theistic Evolution” and “Darwinism Evolution” are two entirely different beliefs. After some discussion (in which I got a pretty good laugh teasing her about another recent "scientific social subject" of her's about a monkey's social development - but that's another story) she admitted that she never considered that difference.

That said, the way you asked if most Baptist were “creationists or evolutionists” doesn’t really make sense as …although I’m sure there are few exceptions but… it would be very difficult to make an argument for a Creator while believing the existence of man happened by chance and the process of natural selection and preservation. There is about as much chance of that happening as a tornado flying over a junk yard and putting together a 747. ...And that is not even getting started on the spiritual nature of man. IOWs very very few Bible believing Christians of any denomination would claim to be an evolutionist in the Darwinistic sense. Now, if you clarified and asked about a % of Theistic Evolutionists I would say there are some around in one form or another but it would NOT be an “or” creationists question but rather "and". If you get my Bible Believing Baptist drift…

Is it possible for a Baptist to accept evolution as a viable theory?

If you ask the question, do all Baptists believe that "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," what do you think the response would be?

Treating Creation and Evolution as two opposing systems is misleading and counterproductive. Why? Because Evolution needs Creation to get started. Always has, always will. Why? Because you have to already have something before it can begin to evolve.

I guess you missed my point about clarifying what form of evolution you speak of? But, to answer your question, if you are suggesting a Bible believing person accepting evolution in disregard of creation I would say, no - as far holding to logic and truth, maintaining truth in one's heart being a necessary condition of holding to faith.

In my opinion, any statistics gathered probably wouldn't be very accurate...for a variety of reasons.

    My opinion is, "Yes".

In fact, as a very young believer in 1978, I was both taught and held to ( briefly ) the idea that mankind came from apes.
Please understand that I was 12 years old and newly born-again. ;)

The theory ( yes, to me it's still an unproven theory, no matter what today's scientific community fervently asserts about it ) has been dominant in the American public school system for about 100 years now, and I was a product of it until God's word started changing my thinking.

    For the record,
I've seen some churches ( even in my area of roughly 350,000 people ) that call themselves "Baptist", that have woman "pastors", deny the inspiration of Scripture, deny the preservation of Scripture, deny the virgin birth, deny Christ as being both God and man, and deny many other biblical truths... so I'm not surprised when I hear about some Baptists who deny a literal, six-day creation event and see the worth in what I consider theories such as Darwinian Evolution and even "Theistic Evolution".:(

I've also known and heard of Baptists that profess Christ, but in works deny Him ( Titus 1:10-16 ), resist the truth ( 2 Timothy 3:1-9 ), refuse correction from God's word, and over decades not show any real Scriptural understanding or personal desire to seek God or even to seek the presence of His people, other than on Sundays.

I've seen people that I grew to adulthood with in my first Baptist church ( and some of the ones after that ), who have fallen back into the world and love it, and get very uncomfortable when the subject of Jesus Christ and His commandments come up...and their attitudes about the truth of His word have changed, as well.:Sick

    Do I condemn them?
    No.
    As their Judge?
    Never.

It may seem like I'm doing that, but my only motivation for stating things the way that I have, is out of objectivity, disappointment and especially sadness, that so many who profess Christ are not educating themselves out of God's word, are content to let today's teachers ( many of whom I believe are false teachers ) do it for them, and are otherwise interested in what this temporary and fleeting world has to offer...instead of pursuing their Saviour's commands ( 2 Timothy 2:15-16 ) and pursuing Him in all things with a love and a heart-felt desire to obey Him out of gratitude for His unspeakable gift of eternal life.

To me, the denominations are filled with varying degrees of wheat and tares, and the lump has been fully leavened.
The Lord's words about the last days have come true, in my estimation, and I watch for Him to come very soon now.:Speechless

May God bless you abundantly, sir.:)

I would say that most Baptists agree with theistic evolution and that the earth is 4.5 billion years old and the universe 14 billion years old.

Most Baptists reject the idea that the earth is only 6,000 years old.

This is mostly the fault of the socialistic school teachers and the bad school system in the USA which teaches Darwin as fact and deep time as scientific certainty and not allowing any debate.

The Young Earth Creationist belief was suppressed by the European Enlightenment made up of deists and atheists.

Over a half century ago, Young Earth Creationism began to refute old earth ideas with modern scientific knowledge.

Here is the heart of the problem about old earth. If the history of The Holy Bible is not true, then how can the morality and theology of The Holy Bible be true?

    Thanks! Good question!

"Theistic evolution is the idea that God started or directed evolutionary processes. This view makes God a bumbling, incompetent Creator and the author of death and suffering as it puts them before mankind’s sin. It calls into question the truth of God’s Word and his character as an all-powerful, loving God."

    Thank you!

    Have you been to Williamstown?

I don't think that theistic evolutionists realize how modern science has made so much advancement as to render yesterday's science obsolete. Creationism is very much based upon advanced science.

Creationism is based on the belief of a Creator first and foremost, - science helps systematically organize and structure knowledge, information and facts to demonstrate this truth through human reasoning and theories.

Apologies then. To address more fully in context:

I don't think some realize how just how much some theistic evolutionists use modern science to support their Biblical accounts theories of creationism being they would shoot out blanket statements of their theories being "unbiblical".

Therefore, your conclusion regarding the premise of them being unbiblical according to what they base their belief upon does not follow, in fact, they would agree with your statement after clarifying their belief in a Creator first and foremost: "Creationism is very much based upon advanced science." ...and generally would present the argument for a Creator through modern science to fit the biblical account more convincingly than most YEC per my observations.
