Before attempting to understand the biblical meaning of redemption, we need to ask, “redemption from what?” The most consistent picture is that of slaves or captives being set free from bondage by the payment of a price.

The root meaning of the Greek words translated redeemed or redemption is loosening, with some forms of the word being combined with “apo” meaning “out from.” So the idea of the combined word is to be not only set free but also transported from captivity to someplace else, e.g. deliverance.

The Greek word transliterated “lutrosin” appears three times, Luke 1:68, Luke 2:38 and Hebrews 9:12.

In Luke 1:68 we see the prophecy that God visited us and accomplished redemption for His people. This usage presents the idea of being rescued and saved from a bad situation,
(see verse 71 and verse 74).

Luke 2:38 references people who are “looking for the redemption of Jerusalem” with Jerusalem being an idiomatic reference to God’s people.

In Hebrews 9:12, we see that Christ through His blood obtained eternal redemption. This fits the picture of being set free from bondage by the payment of a price. Further, this redemption is eternal; it does not have a shelf life.

In Luke 21:28, Jesus says of His second coming, pay attention because your “redemption is drawing near.” Here redemption appears to be a function or attribute of Christ.

So from these examples we can see that redemption is used for more than one purpose, to be redeemed from political bondage (Luke 1:68 and 2:38), from the bondage of sin (Hebrews 9:12) and from the bondage of our corrupt flesh when we are raised or changed in the twinkling of an eye, to glorified bodies. On the other hand, the deliver is always the same, Christ Jesus our Lord.

In three other verses we find a related word that perhaps should be best translated “ransomed”. In Luke 24:21 we find folks who hoped Jesus was the one who would redeem Israel apparently from political bondage. In Titus 2:14, we see that Jesus gave Himself up for us to redeem us from every lawless deed. And in 1 Peter 1:18-19, we learn that we were not redeemed with corruptible stuff like silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Jesus. It is clear that Jesus paid the ransom with His blood, but it is not clear whether we were set free when He shed His blood, or when we were spiritually placed in Christ and washed with His blood.

Jesus was both the High Priest who slays the sacrifice and then sprinkles the blood on those receiving the benefit of the sacrifice, and the sacrifice, the Lamb of God.

Having nibbled around the edges, lets get to the heart of the matter by looking at the writings of Paul concerning redemption. Lets focus on the usage where folks are redeemed from every lawless deed, the bondage of sin. The other two usages seem to apply to the second coming of Christ, and for the time being we are concerned with His accomplishment of redemption in His first coming.

Romans 3:24 says (NASB), “being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.” God’s grace can accomplish many varied things, and so Paul makes it clear that the grace being given is through or by the means of the redemption [deliverance], which is in Christ Jesus. So this verse points to receiving the benefit of Christ’s sacrifice when we are “in Christ” rather than when He shed His precious blood on the cross.

Romans 8:23 refers to the redemption of our body, setting us free from our corrupt flesh, and so because this is associated with His second coming, lets move on.

1 Corinthians 1:30 says (NASB), “ But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Here again, scripture pretty clearly teaches that when God put us in Christ spiritually, Christ became via our indwelt Holy Spirit, wisdom from God, provided the righteousness of God to us,
in Christ we are set apart, and in Christ we are redeemed from the bondage of sin, and delivered spiritually into the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 1:7 says (NASB), “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” So again, only when “in Him” do we have the gift of His redemptive grace, which sets us free from every lawless deed, the forgiveness of our trespasses.

Ephesians 1:14 and 4:30 refer to our redemption from our corrupt flesh. But as a sidelight when we are placed spiritually in Christ, we received our eternal redemption from the bondage of sin, and we are sealed with the Holy Spirit in Christ as a pledge of our inheritance which is to be raised in glorified bodies, set free from the corruption of the flesh.

Lastly Colossians 1:13-14 completely summarizes the biblical concept of redemption from the bondage of sin. “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

    May God Bless

Take a blank 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper. Draw a 3" circle on the right side. Label the circle
"In Christ." Draw a black dot 2" outside the circle. Label the dot "Lost soul." Draw an arrow from the dot to inside the circle. Label it redemption. Got it?

Whenever someone tells me I can lose my salvation, I remind my self I've been bought with a price (redeemed). And God does not have a return window to get His payment back.

Paul in Romans 8 agrees with you, as salvation from start to finish is of the Lord!

Jesus said, your faith has saved you. (Luke 7:50) Note it does not say "your God instilled faith has saved you. God says whoever believes into Him will not perish, not whoever God compels to believe into Him will not perish.

When God credits a person's faith in Christ as righteousness, He transfers them into Christ spiritually, thus redeeming them.

    Does "bought" mean "redeemed?"

    2Pe 2:1
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

Answer, no. As the Opening Post presents, we are "redeemed" when and if God transfers us spiritually into Christ!

No one can come unless the Father has given him. So yes, it actually does say God-given faith. If we are the only agent of belief, that creates a works-based salvation. It is a gift of God, NOT of works.

No, your assertions are not in scripture.
    1) John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. Therefore individuals, and not faith are given (transferred into) to Christ.
    2) God credits our faith as righteousness, not His instilled faith. Romans 4:4-5. 23-24.

Actually this affirms what I said. The individuals that will place their faith in Christ are the ones who the Father gives to Christ. Thank you for proving my point.

Cherry picking verses I see to take them out of context with inadvertently twists their meaning.

No need to continue, sir. IMHO, you are simply saying "taint so" without providing evidence.

Irresistible Grace, also called the effectual call, the internal call, the gift of faith and who knows what else is a fiction found no where in scripture. John 6:37 teaches God gives to (transfers into) Christ individuals, and once given to Christ, Christ will never cast them out, once saved always saved. Redemption occurs not when we were "bought" but when we are chosen through faith and transferred into Christ, the sanctification by the Spirit.

Faith saved no sinner, as who saves is the object of that faith!

We are saved by grace through faith. Thus if God chooses to credit our faith in Him as righteousness, He redeems us by setting us apart in Christ.

Consider the illustration of the oil lease. By purchasing the lease, the owner paid for the right to extract any oil he desires and the right to leave the oil in the ground. Jesus paid the price to forgive any sinner He desires, but retains the right to leave others in their sinful state, unforgiven.

The key difference in true redemption doctrine is that we are healed by His stripes when we are transferred into Christ, rather than when Christ paid the price of forgiveness.

FWIW, arminians dont think you lose salvation like a set of keys.

Forfeit or apostatize would be better terms.

Not trying to change your mind on anything but people say "lose" all to often and that's not what classical arminians believe.

Gorship, I understand the classical position.

I first ran into the question one cold December evening at a "Christian" servicemen's club across the street from Great Lakes Naval Training Center where I was doing two weeks ACDUTRA. It was operated by a charismatic outfit. They proceeded to toss me out when the found out I went to a Baptist Bible College and thus believed in the "damnable Calvinist heresy" of eternal security. As I walked back to my barracks, I remembered Ephesians 2:8-9.

Then, there are the years I've ministered to the emigre Russian Evangelical Christian-Baptists here in the States. Those folks believe "in apostatizing".

Apologies sir. I didnt mean to insinuate you weren't aware. Rather just trying to clarify the position. And try and find a thread on here i know something about! Hah

It's too bad to hear about the encounters you've had. I've been and seem to continue to be on both sides of the debate from time to time and both sides certainly can be a bit rough.

    All the best,

Actually, the Russians at least have good reason with the betrayals they've experienced over the years from folks who in all other regards were believers in good standing.

1 Peter 1:18-21. 'Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot........'

So our redemption was from our former way of life. It was accomplished by Christ's sacrifice of Himself on the cross. We read on that Christ, '.....Was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifested in these last times for you, who through Him believe in God......' We note first that Christ was foreordained from before the beginning of time, and that He was 'manifested for those to whom Peter was writing: '....To the......elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father' (1 Peter 1:1-2). This is further explained in Ephesians 1:4, that, 'He chose us in [Christ] before the foundation of the world, [in order] that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.' So we are not placed or transferred into Christ when we believe. We are transferred into the kingdom of Christ when we believe (Colossians 1:13), but we were given to Christ by God the Father in eternity past to be redeemed (John 6:38-39; 10:27-29). Through our union with Christ, we were 'in Christ' when He was crucified (Romans 6:8; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 3:3), when He was raised (Ephesians 2:5; Colossians 3:1) and when He ascended to heaven (Ephesians 2:6). But these blessings, although they are absolutely safe, secure and certain (c.f. Romans 8:28-30; Galatians 1:15-16), do not come to us until we believe, so that Paul can speak of a couple who were 'in Christ before me' (Romans 16:7).

We use 'redeem' and 'redemption' in various ways today. people speak of redeeming themselves by atoning for past misbehaviour through some good deed.. Also, we redeem vouchers or trading stamps for goods, possibly at a 'redemption Centre.' We can also redeem something by buying it back or repaying the debt on it.

The Bible is very clear that we cannot redeem ourselves or each other. 'None can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him........that he should continue to live forever, and not see the Pit' (Psalms 49:7-9). 'For when we were still without strength [or 'helpless'], in due time Christ died for the ungodly' (Romans 5:6). It is the Triune God who has redeemed us: the father, by choosing us for salvation in Christ and giving us to Him to redeem; the Son, by paying the full price of our redemption and propitiating the righteous anger of God against sin, and the Holy Spirit, by sealing us, and guaranteeing 'our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory' (Ephesians 1:14). So there is a final 'Day of Redemption' when the elect of God shall be finally revealed (Matthew 25:34).
