Does Your Cat Earn Its' Keep?

When we lived in Maine one winter morning we also found a cat near death on our back porch - in fact when i brought it into the house I thought it was dead indeed. But I felt some movement so we brought her close to the wood stove.

We nursed her back to health which was a quick process, at first we did not know she was with kitten but by the time she gave birth she had healed nicely. She was a real Maine Coon Cat and the kittens seemed well defined as Maine Coon.

Neighbors were miles away in any direction from our farm but we put the word out - no one claimed her.

We already had breeding Siamese and an American Tabby so we sold her and the 4 kittens to a Connecticut family for several hundred dollars.

 

We recently took in a starving Calico kitty, wormed her, got her spayed, and yes, she's an excellent mouser. Don't know if she'd leave our free range chickens be though, so now she's confined to the house.

My dog ate my cat.

 

...whoa, that's a big kitty. They remind me of back in 87 we had something taking our chickens at night and I had seen a huge red dog snooping around, assumed it was the culprit and set a deadfall big enough to handle him baited with chicken leg quarters. For three nights in a row I caught three huge [flat] cats that were the culprits. Come to find out later they were most likely barn cats from an abandoned hog farm down the road.

 

Yeah, Maine Coon Cats are 10 - 25 lbs fully grown.They have very fluffy fur so they look humungus.

They are supper docile, very gentle even the wild ones, great with kids but surprisingly ferocious hunters.

Called Coon Cats because of their size and markings they can (in the wild) be and were mistaken for raccoons.

 

Hmm I'd mistake them for a bobcat before I would a coon, or head on with those ears they look like a lynx.

 

They like to hunt in meadows at about 1 foot tall grass.

 

No pictures, we didn't even name her, she was a smaller Coon Car about 15 lbs, but bigger than a regular house cat.
Like most Coon Cats she was very docile. Now that I think about it , one of the kids did give her a name - Midnight.

 

Our cat provides comfort to my ailing wife so she certainly earns her keep. It's funny how when she is particularly hurting, the cat senses my wife's pain and will go park herself right onto my her body as she is laying in bed, all to give her some friendly support. It's uncanny!

 

One year my kids asked for a cat for Christmas.

I told them that normally I preferred turkey...but if that would make them happy.

 

Sorry that your wife suffers. We had a cat that would sense my wife suffering with migraines and would try to comfort her. He lived a happy full life here on the homestead, a really cool cat.

 

Our cats don’t bother the chickens.

 

We have lost a couple to raccoons and one to a neighbors dog.

 

I believe this one would under the right circumstances. She's an experienced hunter. She was abandoned by her owners and survived on her own for months before we met and adopted each other.

In the beginning we lost a couple to a family of red-tails and a couple to foxes before the Anatolians matured enough to kill any varmint that steps foot on the homestead and realize their job was to guard the chickens. Knock on wood, haven't lost a chicken in over a year.
