The Baptist Hymnal by Holman is good, and the favorite is the Trinity hymnal (baptist edition).

I think we have the 2008....though I am not 100% sure. It might be the 1991. Though I doubt it....it contains the chorus of Awesome God. So I doubt that is 1991...though it may be. I will check tomorrow.

I used to have a rather large collection of hymnals.

Of them all, two or three stood out.

    In no particular order:
    Soul Stirring Songs and Hymns
    Majesty Hymns
    Hymns of Faith

But I have to admit, I still miss the Broadman Hymnal.

Was raised on it, had a copy until just a few years ago, and loved to sing from it. Remember the green on white songs on the inside covers?

My mother heard me singing from it as a child and when I came to her with a question about the lyrics she used the opportunity to bridge to the Scriptures and lead me to the claim of Christ on my life.

Anyone remember when the “Baptist Hymnal” had “Just as i Am” on page 240?

I spent many years standing before the assemblies leading from that hymnal. I really never enjoyed the early 70’s revision or any since.

But that is just me being obstinate.

Sad thing is most young people don't know what a hymnal is.
Hymns of The Spirit is my favorite.

    This is too true.

You know, if you had told my teenage self that as an adult I would love the hymns more than contemporary music I would have laughed and said you were crazy. But I truly do.

Anyone seen Hymns of Grace? The Master's Seminary Press - Hymns of Grace

Beyond just knowing a hymn number by memory is a point when you know every word and don't even have to take out the hymnal.
I know of a pastor who called for "Just As I Am" to be sung EVERY Sunday!

    That pastor — Charles Spurgeon!

    From his sermon 'Conversions Encouraged'

"To-day, "from thence," from the place where you now are, turn your face to your Father who is in heaven, and seek him through Jesus Christ. Recollect that hymn which ought to be sung every Sabbath-day in our assemblies—

'Just as I am—and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come.'

Every verse begins with 'Just as I am,' and so must your prayer, your faith, your hope begin. The whole hymn commences 'Just as I am,' and so must your Christian life be started."

    Hallelujah!

My church has no music, but of the hymnals I've seen in others, my fave is the Broadman.

Fave hymn? "How Great Thou Art".

My unfavourite is the ubiquitous OHP - I like a music hymn book in my hands. The OHP doesn't help with music when it shows unfamiliar new hymns. For over 50 years I have always bought the music edition of the hymn book in use in the church.

I have Sankey, Methodist, Scottish Psalter, Redemption, Hymns for Today's Church, Praise!, Christian Hymns ....

My favourite is Praise! It has about 1,000 hymns about half of which are "traditional" but revised to remove the awkward language derived from the KJV. It begins with all 150 Psalms revised or rewritten to change the poor poetry of the 400 year old Psalter, The compilers were all evangelical, so the Biblical quality is consistently high.

But I still write hymns from time to time.
