    Could it be as simple as heavy object tend to sink in softer soils?

    The ancestors of the same people who live there now. PBS' Nova once did a piece on that, demonstrating that they still know how to move them. I think this was in response to the claims by von Daniken and other nuts that alien technology was needed. It wasn't and it ain't.

    Several ancient peoples had the ability to carve & move large stones. Stonehenge was quarried about 20 miles from its site, its upright stones weigh up to 35-40 tons, & its lintel stones are 5 to 7 tons each.

    The Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt is 481 ft. high, & each of its stone blocks is about 6,000lb. They're cut & shaped so well that a piece of paper can't be slipped between many of them. The main bulk of the stone was quarried from about 500 feet away.
