Most here are familiar with names like Arafat, Nassar, Ben Gurion, Begin, and Golda Mier. However, Amin al-Husseini (for his wiki article) is largely forgotten. As Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (1921 – 1937), he was an opponent of Jewish immigration to Palestine. Youtube has a whole bunch of videos on him.

I fear I was a bit too teres in my OP.
As Grand Mufti he was in charge of Jerusalem's Islamic holy places, He was from a leading clan in Jerusalem. AaH was active as an anti-Zionist starting in 1920. He was an Arab/Palestinian nationalist. From what I have gleaned, he sought to reestablish the Islamic dominance that the region had under Ottoman rule. This leads him in the 30s to align himself with the Axis powers. He spent WW2 in Berlin as a guest of the Third Reich.

He managed to stay one step ahead of his many enemies, & escaped being killed by the Jews. He set the pattern for later troublemakers.

I admit that I was wondering which direction you were wanting the conversation to go. :Biggrin

Interesting, to be sure, the drift from PanArabism to nationalism.

I wasn't thinking of any particular direction. I'm reacting to the sentiment of some here that the "Arab"/Israeli conflict started in 1948. When in fact, the conflict goes back 20+ years to the early 1920s. Al Hussani's anti Zionism lead him to make common cause with the Nazis. This alliance fused the rabid and virulent anti-Semitism of the Third Reich into Arab nationalism.

I agree & posted once that the Arabs got their terrorist tactics from the Germans but some of the Brits said no. I mentioned Otto Scorzeny. The Muslim Brotherhood has a front here in Plainfield Indiana--actually their umbrella organization for the USA. It is called the Islamic Society of North America. This is in the same Hendricks County that has the school district in Lizton Indiana that wants to arrest people on government property who have said something on social media the school officials do not like.

Also, years ago there was a thread about the Islamic Waffen SS & the Mufti.

If the Germans had taken Egypt, they would have had more Islamic troops & control of much oil. Hitler failed to back Rommel enough.

Actually, Goering's father Heinrich was territorial governor in the area now called Namibia in the early 1900s when the Germans caused the deaths of 75,000 blacks who disliked German rule. It is called the 1st German holocaust. All of this is traced to the German embrace of Darwin, a white supremacist. Hitler was a total Darwinist & was inspired by states such as Indiana who sterilized many people in the name of Darwin & science. Oliver Wendell Holmes led the supreme court in approving the forced sterilizations in the USA.

So Darwinism & science in Germany added on the hatred of Jews from the Quran supplied by the British-appointed Mufti. The Brits repaid the Arabs for their help against the Ottoman Empire in WW I but the Arabs outwitted the Brits on that one.

Herman Goering was a son of a holocaust perpetrator although I am not sure that the Germans ever paid for what Heinrich Goering did.

No one has mentioned that the Mufti did propaganda radio broadcasts for Hitler during the war. Hitler was photographed with him once. Hitler didn't care for him too much & spent very little time with him.

I can't remember any details, but I did read somewhere that many arab states joined supported the Nazis. Many S american states supported them secretly and only declared war on Germany after Hitler was dead as did Spain. I did an a list of the declarations of war years ago but I don't know what happened to it. If I remember correctly Ireland was the only country ro go into official mourning for Hitler.

The Kurds I knew in 2004 still had a pretty high opinion of Hitler. It was bizarre. I guess he had rated them high on the Aryan race scale.

Good point! The rat lines did go to South America after the war. Argentina must have been one of the fascist sympathizers. I never thought about Spain. The Germans believed that Darwin was scientific and so they believed Darwin's white supremacy.

I believe he obtained a British passport by fraud. The only reason we were able to hang him for treason was that he had a British passport. His lawyer tried to argue that he was not a traitor as he was not British.

The UK did the right thing by shooting him in the rear end & capturing him & hanging him. "I love it when a plan comes together!" --John "Hannibal" Smith, A-Team

It is often stated that Ireland did, usually mistitling the Taoiseach and erroneously including the President. You will get this in other answers, so let me pre-empt that lie. Taoiseach and Minister for External Affairs, Éamon de Valera, and Joseph Walshe, Secretary of External Affairs visited Dr. Hempel, the German minister, at the German Embassy in Lisbon, to give condolences on Hitler's suicide. Ireland was technically neutral, and this was merely a necessary neutral political acknowledgement, which de Valera thought was essential courtesy.
