Yea.... Definitely not a Calvinist :Tongue

We hold the same view - the Biblical one.

I don't wish to be called after a man. I prefer to be called a Particular Baptist, which is what some of my ancestors were in the early 19th century.

On the reformed RTI forum I was told that I couldn't be a Calvinist because I wasn't a Presbyterian.

What I meant, evidently, is that we call claim to have a Biblical view, evidently.

Oh I have simple way to deal with that: God predestinated me to be a non-Calvinist.

What made me change is reading a commentary by a Bible believer who defined the terms with cross-references. It was the Bible's own commentary, not an externally molded theological cast into which verses were forced. He showed me how Calvinists interpret simple Bible statements and passages on salvation in the light of hard passages rather than operating the other way around.

Then, it was understanding that the base reason I became a Calvinist is that I was made to think that acknowledging free-will would lead to pride. The oft heard argument is that then "I had something to do with my salvation". So of course I wanted to be humble, so I said yeah ok. Then the concomitant argument is free-will faith amounts to work, which when I studied the Bible, was simply not true, as far the word of God goes (who cares what men who think they're more humble than even God's own standard of humility think).

And then what cemented things, is the many Calvinists on this forum, who literally believed and stated that they are elected (I didn't say "saved" but "elected") outside of Jesus Christ. That is still shocking to me but many here think nought of it.

All of us think we hold to a biblical view. The question is whether we hold to the biblical view. I have no problem with an attitude that says, "I am convinced that the view I hold to is the correct, biblical, view. However, I will abandon my current view if I am convinced by scripture that it is wrong."

We all have anecdotal stories as to why we believe this and why we believe that. I have no burning desire to convert others to Calvinism or Monergism. I do have a passion for testifying of the truth but it is the Holy Spirit who is the agent of change when it comes to understanding scripture. I am happy to leave the convincing to Him.

It's always encouraging to talk to you because you have to find a way to disagree even when you agree ...

Thanks. Very informative. By the way, do you have one with subtitles? I tried to watch this one, but the text all over the screen obscured the video. ;)

I disagree. Most of the time I am able to argue positions without holding the opposing view over which I would argue.

I'm not sure it's particularly astute but it is an observation, and I do not disagree. I like getting in the last word and stubbornly arguing points.

OK. Now I feel better about posting it and even after I deleted it because I thought it was unkind on my part. Thank you for assuaging my misplaced regret.

Well, as a moderator you have the bully pulpit, so you can always get the last word in before closing a thread.

See what I mean about it not being a very astute observation?

If Squire or rsr don't beat me to it, when the thread gets to 130 or so posts I get to say "this thread is closed".

It is less satisfy than it sounds.

As much as I enjoy this tête-à-tête, it is really your favorite game, not mine. I am done.
