Days honoring Mom and Dad have been traditions for years.

In years past, we would ask for the oldest mother and youngest mother.
But in this day and age - we are liable to have a 14 year old mother
or a 85 year old mother who is raising her grand daughter.

We may ask how many dads we have - but what about the dad
that lost his only daughter to leukemia just a few months ago -
or the da who has an ex-wife that has not allowed dad to see his
son for the past 8 years.

How should we handle such situations?e
Actual experiences by the pastor or parent would be extremely helpful.

Salty, I was a preaching elder, so I do have actual experience. We did not observe Mother's Day or Father's Day in the church. We also did not observe Memorial Day or the 4th of July. No God and Country Rallies. The Lord's Day worship was just as the name implies, worship of the Lord Jesus Christ. Of course, as a church that practiced the Regulative Principle, this was to be expected. I sit in judgment on no one else in regards to how they worship and handle these days.

There is nothing in scripture that mandates a celebration of these days

When you adhere tobthe RPW, its a nonissue

If you are talking about honoring women in worship (Which was my frame of reference), it is about the RPW

    My apologies

I think we should honor our Mother's on Mother's day. I did not see much value in that day, until my wife presented me with our first born child. Now I know what it is for and I am all for it.

But how would you deal with the situations as presented in the OP?

I would recommend honoring them all equally. A single rose rose each would suffice for the mothers. A simple thank you would suffice for the men.

By honoring Mothers on Mother's Day! Anytime we provide humor from the pulpit, some in the audience are grieving. No one thinks the message should be calculated not to rub every attender the wrong way!

Many years ago I was in a church that recognized different mothers (oldest, youngest, etc.). I do not recall anything specific about Father's Day. I don't think there were any great problems, though it did seem a way to possibly breed jealousy.

I think the best way to handle it is to not do the recognitions. At our church we don't do anything specific, beyond usually acknowledging that it is a day on which our nation honors mothers (or fathers), and that godly fathers and mothers are appreciated.

    Handle what?
Do young mothers, or elderly ones "not count"?
Or fathers who've lost their children?
    What are you thinking, Salty?

    a) do you want to honor a 15 year old mother who is unmarried

    b) do you want to honor that dad - who just lost his Daugherty to a vehicle accident
last month... He is liable to walk out.

Salty, the RPW notwithstanding, the grieving mother or father or the parents who are not able to have children are a practical reason not to bring these special days into the worship service. There are other ways for a church to handle these days if they believe they should be commemorated. They can always have a mother's and father's breakfast or some other celebration outside of the worship service.

Why do you have to deal with them?
The 14 year old mother is a mother. The father who has not been able to see his kids is a father. The 85 year old grandmother is a mother because you have to be a mither to be a grandmother.
    Whats the problem?

That idea sounds good enough to me. It would seem improper to have a 14 year old unmarried mom to stand and be recognized for her promiscuity or a young man whose fatherhood is a result of statutory rape. Maybe have all the moms who are still raising children come forward and offer a special prayer from the pulpit.

Plenty - do we want to honor a 14 year old - who had a baby out of wedlock?
That dad just may not attend church on Fathers day because it hurts too much

    Big problems -

Actually Reformed has given us a good ideal.

We merely provide a small gift for all mothers. We recognize the oldest mother and one with most (children, grand, great grand).
