Our bodies are amazingly strong and resilient, especially when they are working at their peak. Do you take any steps to boost your immune system?

Because of my age (66 yrs young) my middle daughter succeeded in persuading me to try hi-dose vitamin C therapy, so, my wife and I have now incorporated >2000 mg Sodium Ascorbate (the reviews convinced me to try it) into our daily routine. It's only been a couple of days but 'I think' I feel better, maybe some let up in the allergies that hit us this time of year, too early to tell for sure.

OTOH, my youngest daughter, who is a very serious well informed ICU RN, insists that our bodies expel all this extra vitamin C in the urine.

    [add]

I've also slowly resumed the practice of the Tai Chi Solo Form which I had neglected due to serious foot injuries over the years. This definitely makes me feel better, not sure about the vitamin C therapy.

About 8 months ago, I was convinced by a nutritionist/trainer that men over 50 greatly benefit from taking Turmeric, D3, Zinc and Magnesium. I've been taking them twice a week (I generally do these things in moderation) and noticed a definite improvement with my allergies which also leads to more energy. I usually take them with a tall glass of 1/2 Green Machine and 1/2 organic carrot juice which I have been drinking for a couple years, since I'm too lazy to juice, and find it a great metabolism booster.

There's a lot more concerning diet but these supplements have time and again picked me up.

Besides diet, exercise is huge toward boosting your immune system. Any routine to keep the heart rate up and work muscles for 30 minutes or so will make a big difference in your body's performance in a short time. This is seriously underrated.

No, four separate supplements. The Turmeric is a large capsule, D3 is a gel tab, Zinc was in pill form but new bottle is capsule and Magnesium is in pill form.

The Turmeric is probably my favorite and has many benefits such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, joint and heart health and memory/focus but is kind of costly.

D3 is an essential antioxidant vitamin and often in low supply.

Zinc and Magnesium are important minerals that tests show the majority of men over 50 are deficient in, yet are very beneficial for men over 50.

Often overlooked is that up to 70% of your immune system cells live in your gastrointestinal tract so good bacteria for gut health are essential. Therefore, probiotics which come from food groups is important. Yogurt, cheese and olives are good sources.

I normally have a fruit smoothie at least once a week with yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, banana and orange juice. I pretty much always have a jar of olives in the frig and actually I eat too much cheese, but at least I have the good from the cheese, so an excuse.

Processed foods and many fast foods cause a poor balance of gut bacteria which weakens our immune system. Natural foods such as fruit and vegetables strengthen it.

    Resistant Starch: Gut Superfood

I 'retrograde' the starch in potatoes, rice, and pasta simply by cooking, cooling, and reheating. Also use green bananas and raw potato starch in smoothies, when I'm in smoothie mode.

I remember you talking about this (reheated pasta) once before. I've got it down these days that I cook exactly what I need so there is no cooked pasta to keep. But, I actually remembered that my mom used to put the leftover spaghetti sauce stirred in with the extra pasta and refrigerate and as a teenager I would pig out on it and then have a lot of energy and do some killer workouts afterward.

A fever boosts your immune system. I try to avoid fever reducing drugs and believe often times it gives the virus a second wind while it slows down one of your best defenses.

If sick eating some protein is especially important as that is the building blocks of our bodies.

I usually gulp down a massive amount of supplements every morning. I hope that my immune sydtem is getting a boost from all of that. Sometimes I grind up flax seed and other times , chia seed, mixed with cold water, turmeric powder and ground up peppercorns, then gulped down quickly. Also, I take a Centrum Silver, 2000mg of vitamin C, "Garlique" pill, occuvite, D-3, fish oil, "Urino Zinc," folic acid, then wash it all down with a shot of "Metamucil." If there is any room left in my belly, I may also disolve a tablespoon of beet powder in a cup of water and gulp it down also.

When I told my cardiologist about all of that, he said "You are just wasting your money!" He is insistent that I take the statins that he prescribed, but I get tired, weak legs from the statins and haven't been faithful to take them.

I do things like supplements in moderation and when it comes to vitamins I try to keep it as natural as possible while I focus on possible deficiencies. That said, I would do vitamins over drugs any day.

I regularly drink vitamin c, 2 cups of warm lemon and honey and instead of drinking cold liquids,I replace it warm water, tea and soup.

I've started drinking a warm glass of water first thing in the morning about t a month ago and it really seems to pick me up. I bought lemons the other day and have a squeezer coming today and am anxious to start adding 1/2 of a juiced lemon to that water.
