I have Edgar Johnson Goodspeed's New Testament which was called by the header. I have the 1948 edition and the 1951 second impression.

I picked up a book by him for a quarter last month. It's called simply Paul. EJG was an accomplished scholar. On the backside of the book The York Times says :"Dr. Goodspeed's life of Paul is pleasantly difficult." I haven't found it so, but it is compact with no easy divisions within its 21 chapters.

He wrote about 15 books and also has a manuscript collection bearing his name in Chicago.

He was born in 1871 and died in 1962.

I'll give some snips from his N.T.

    Romans 12:1,2 :
"I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by this mercy of God, to offer your bodies in a living sacrifice that will be holy and acceptable to God; that is your rational worship. You must not adopt the customs of this world but by your new attitude of mind be transformed so that you can find out what God's will is ---what is good, pleasing and perfect."

You post way too much. And most of the time it is utter bunk. Read, think, re-read, and arrange your feeble thoughts into some semblance of order. Goodspeed's translation has no resemblance to Peterson's stuff. Or are you so out of it that you have no idea?

    Ephesians 1:4-8

Through him he chose us out before the creation of the world, to be consecrated and above reproach in his sight in love. He foreordained us to become his sons through Jesus Christ, in fulfilment of his generous purpose, so that we might praise the splendid blessing which he has given us through his beloved Son. It is through union with him and through his blood that we have been delivered and our offences forgiven, in the abundance of his mercy which he has lavished upon us.

The word 'this' is not in the Greek text. Does it make a lot of difference? Possibly not, but if it doesn't, why put it in? If it does make a difference, even more why put it in since it doesn't belong there?

If the Holy Spirit had wanted to refer Paul's readers back to 11:33-26, He would have added a houtos ('this') to the text. But He didn't and it's not for us to put it there.

    Colossians 2: 8,9

Take care that nobody exploits you through the pretensions of philosophy, guided by human tradition, following material ways of looking at things, instead of following Christ. For it is in him that all the fullness of God's nature lives embodied.

    Philippians 2:5-8

Have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he possessed the nature of God, he did not grasp at equality with God, but laid it aside to take on the nature of a slave and become like other men. When he had assumed human form, he still further humbled himself and carried his obedience so far as to die, and to die upon the cross.

    Second edition, 1923

Goodspeed’s version is of note because he translated from the Critical Greek Text rather than from the textus receptus texts.

And he didn’t versify his translation.

    1 Timothy 1:3,4

As I asked you to do when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on in Ephesus in order to warn certain people there not to teach strange views nor to devote themselves to fictions and interminable pedigrees; such things lead to controversy instead of the divine system which operates through faith.

In my later edition of Goodspeed there is versification, but not clearly marked off.

But there is another “American Translation”, that of the Old Testament edited by J.M Powis Smith in 1923.

    2 Timothy 2:15,16

Do your best to win God's approval as a workman who has nothing to be ashamed of, but rightly shapes the message of truth. Leave worldly empty phrases alone, for they lead people deeper and deeper into godlessness.

    Titus 1:15,16

To the pure everything is pure, but to the evil-minded and unbelieving nothing is pure, but their very minds and consciences are unclean. They profess to know God, but they disown him by what they do; they are detestable, disobedient men, worthless for any good purpose.

    Hebrews 2:1-4

This is why we must give the very closest attention to the message we have heard, to keep
from ever losing our hold upon it. For if the message delivered by angels proved to be authentic, and every violation or neglect of it led to a corresponding penalty, how can we escape if we pay no attention to such a salvation as this?
It was first proclaimed by the LORD himself, and it was guaranteed to us by those who heard him,
while God himself corroborated their testimony with signs, portents, and various wonders,
and by impartations of the holy Spirit when he saw fit.

    Hebrew 12:1,2

Therefore, let us too, with such a crowd of witnesses about us, throw off every impediment and the entanglement of sin, and run with determination the race for which we are entered, fixing our eyes upon Jesus, our leader and example in faith, who, in place of the happiness that belonged to him, submitted to a cross, caring nothing for its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

I will begin to give snippets of verse comparisons in the book of Acts between Goodspeed's An American Translation and the ESV. I'll use AAT for Goodspeed. Remember, I'll be using his 1948 edition in which "the general cast of the translation remains unchanged" from the 1923 version.

    2:22
    ESV : in your midst
    AAT : right among you

    3:11
ESV : all the people ran together to them
AAT : all the people crowded about them

    3:23
ESV : that prophet shall be destroyed from the people
AAT : that prophet will be annihilated from among the people

    7:19
    ESV : expose their infants
AAT : abandon their infant children

    7:25
ESV : God was giving them salvation by his hand
AAT : God was using him as the means of delivering them

    7:34
ESV : I have surely seen
AAT : I have certainly seen

    7:41
ESV : were rejoicing in the works of their hands
AAT : held a celebration over what their own hands had made

    8: 1
ESV : And there arose on that day
AAT : broke out that day

    8:21
ESV : You have neither part nor lot in this matter
AAT : You have no share or part in this movement

Continuing in the book of Acts :

    9: 41
ESV : he presented her alive
AAT : he gave her back to them alive

    10:6
ESV : with one Simon, a tanner
AAT : a tanner named Simon

    10:17
    ESV : having made inquiry
    AAT : asked the way

    10:26
    ESV : I too am a man
AAT : I am only human myself

    10:27
ESV : found many persons gathered
AAT : found that many people had gathered

Probably to make more sense, or at least correspond, with the target language (English). "Therefore appeal mercies God" would be considered by many to be a poor translation, no matter how "literal" some may take it.
