The one great thought of the Holy Spirit in Philippians is to make known the Lord Jesus as the Servant (Phl 2:7; e.g. Mat 12:18; 20:28); and this He does, that He may produce in us truehearted service (Jhn 13:14). There is not a thought of our Father’s love but what we get in “the face of the Lord Jesus” (2Co 4:6). He wants to endear His beloved Son to us, and so He associates us with Him in service down here, as He has associated us with Him in glory above. There is something much deeper meant by being a servant than the office of pastor, deacon or the like. It is not the law, nor the appointed office that can make servants; but fellowship with the Lord Jesus who calls to service, and this puts us in the path and gives us enablement.

If my Father has not given me enough to place me in His presence, then He cannot do more. He has not another Son to give. He cannot disparage the work of His Beloved Son. What a difference it makes to a Christian when passing through trials in service, if he has the Lord Jesus for his Object—when, in the midst of difficulties, he sees Him as his standing and his strength, the ground from which he acts! If I am put in a place of service for my Father, it is to the Lord Jesus I have to look, and in Him I have to trust and not man at all. If I am God’s servant, it is not for the glory of the flesh; the flesh I am to judge: if I do not, I shall be sure to get humbled by it, for it will lead me to disgrace the Lord Jesus.

What we have most prominently brought out in Philippians is the experience of the Christian servant, and what it is that qualifies and gives the heart of every true believer courage for service. It is not Christian affection, love, or humility, those these must be; and it is not that which encourages. What keeps us, as well as that which sets us in the path, is what we have and what we are in the Lord Jesus Christ. We must have mercy, kindness and compassion; but that does not give us enablement. That which enables is what we see in the Lord Jesus and receive from looking at Him (2Co 3:18; Heb 12:2).

The world (unbelievers, which has always consisted of the majority of mankind – Mat 7:13, 140—NC) and the flesh (sin nature; old man—NC) would makes us forget we are in the Lord Jesus. The devil ever aims to keep us off the consciousness of our ground of standing. If I am thinking of my home as God’s Word speaks of it, and of the Lord Jesus as the Spirit makes Him known, I am attracted by His love and sheltered by His power. I am raised up above the world’s vanity by the glory I see in Him, and kept out of temptation by the beauty of the place He has brought me to. I cannot be higher than the Father has positioned me in the ascended Lord Jesus—bone of His bone, flesh of His flesh (Eph 5:30)—bound up with Him in life and service, made to sit together in Him in the heavenlies (Eph 2:6).

I have my place at the Father’s right hand, and I am down here to do His will—to be His son and servant. Nothing fits me for serving, or enables me to walk in obedience, like the apprehension of my association with the glorified Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing gives me power to abstain from evil as the realization of my union with the exalted One in heaven. I do not the least doubt the Cross is the foundation of every blessing; but it is the ascended Lord Jesus I belong to—the One who has died and is now in glory.

The Father will, at all times, provide for His own people. In the millennium, it will be blessing come down from heaven to earth; Christ over the people, and Satan not there (Rev 20:2). But what keeps us now, is the power of God in grace who has united me to the loving Lord Jesus above by His Spirit. What is the effect of seeing Him? “We are changed in to the same image from glory to glory” (2Co 3:18).

Hi and thanks for the reply! The issue of the article is that of being useful to others in the Gospel, i.e serving one another who are in the faith, as the Lord was also a servant (Mar 10:44, 45; Jhn 13:14, 15; Gal 5:13).

    God bless!

Yes, you are absolutely right. Our Lord was our Servant. At the same time it sounds quite unusual because I do not know any other god who would serve his subjects, and not only serve them, but even die for them!

You mentioned that we should serve one another, which is very good thing. So, how you imagine such service, in what deeds such service can be revealed and expressed itself?

Seek to love one another as the Lord Jesus loves us (Jhn 15:12), which is maintaining unconditional love; and the rest will continually flow from the Spirit's teaching and enablement via continuously rereading His Word (esp. the NT).

Seriously Net, let us leave clichés and pretty words, behind, and explain the practical use of love, mercy, compassion, and help to other.

It seems to me that Christianity today use only theological terminology and explanations of Christian values, while Jesus Christ put all those values to use and implemented them in practice.

Jesus spoke about love, mercy, compassion, and help to others constantly, and as a proof of His words He did that He said.

Churches and many others who call themselves preach all these values to others, but when it comes to put them to use, suddenly none of them willing to do them.

Christian hypocrisy very visible in all the churches I ever been and this is not pleasant scene, but what churches do very good and never fail is collecting money.

If you do not want answer my question straight, this is fine. But if you ask me what I do with love, mercy, compassion, and help to others, as a practical Christian and not theological, indeed I do implementing these qualities in my life as much as my resources allowed me to do.

Do not understand me wrong, I am far not a perfect person and have my own "demons" but I truly lean toward practical use of the qualities of Christ, and I positively sure that I have been blessed by the Lord for my efforts.

Sorry we're not understanding one another, because I'm not certain I understand what you're trying to share, but I'm suspecting that you don't understand or believe me (no offence taken of course).

Hypocrites (and wolves) have always been among the believers (Mat 13:30), and I believe a significant number of them in contemporary Christendom (genuine Christians) are at their lowest point concerning strength of faith and God's love to one another. But it's comforting to me to know that seeing they will always be God's children they will always be in His concern and control (not man's). If we are honestly reborn He is "working" in us until the day the Lord Jesus' returns. Let us be thankful over everything for this certainty He continues to put in us (Phl 2:13).

    God's blessings to your Family!

Thank you Net, GOD bless you and your family as well.

My question was: How we can express love, compassion, mercy, understanding, and good deeds, not in words but in action?

Well, in every church I ever visited I heard sermons about love, compassion, mercy, understanding, and good deeds, but church and its members do not put in practice that they preach.

I particularly remember on occasion when I was looking for a place to stay. I was new in town and I saw one church and visited it. Shortly after I was invited by pastor to his house. I think the name of the church was "The church of Christ," or something like it. In his house were other people members of the church. They asked me many question and I explained them who I am, what I am looking for, and what I am doing here.

Some time later I asked pastor if he know any one who would rent a room or a basement to me, because at that time I shared two bedroom apartment with two drug addicts, and they drove me creasy.

He promised that he will ask some people. He never announced in the church that someone looking for a place to stay and was silent for a while, and I assumed that he forgot his promise and I did not expect anything from him anymore.

When one day he call me and said that he may have a room for me for $ 1.700 a month. I was stunned. I said to him that I do not have such money (if I would have such money I would not need his help, but I would rent a luxury apartments myself). When he said to me, "How about $1.550, then $1.200, $800?" I told him that currently I pay only $600 and have no more resources to pay more. This answer disappointed him and our conversation was over.

Right before this conversation he conducted a sermon about grace, connecting the grace of GOD to Christian grace as followers of their graceful GOD.

Well, the grace of church started from $1.700, which was very expensive grace for me to receive.

But back to my question, I meant practical use of Love, mercy compassion, understanding, and good deeds. In the Bible I found passages and words of Christ there He teach that in order to follow Him we have to sell everything, leave our families behind, and follow Him in order to be His disciples.

You might say, "It is easier say than done," and you are right, but Christ said these words no for nothing, and if He said this words to us, this means that it is possible for us to fulfill His requirements, with His help or without.

And the point I trying to make is this, that in general, there are two types of Christian, Christians in words and Christians in deeds. And what you think, which of these two types will inherit Kingdom of GOD and would live with their Savior for eternity?

You are also right when you wrote that so called "wolfs" penetrated the church, about whom Jesus Christ, Peter and Paul warned early Christians.

Though I've mentioned many hypocrites in the Body, the Church, most are genuine believers, and these are the ones whom God is going to bring to maturity. If we truly want the things of God we should take a place somewhere in a church where He can bring all who are reborn to Jesus and "grow up into Him in all things" (Eph 4:15).

I'm not sure what you mean by "with or without His help," but nothing for God can be done apart from the Lord Jesus (Jhn 15:5).
Seek Him first by putting self last, which is the only way I've found to grow strong in the faith, the Word, and in Christ.

God's love to you, and God be blessed!
