I am glad that you found a hobby that you enjoy and can continue safely during Covid.

That took me a minute. Okay, seriously, this is a hobby that is well suited to Covid. Ooops, I just made a pun, and that was not not my intent when I typed it.

This pandemic is not going anywhere and is going to change how we socialize and self-soothe and shop and church and just everything. Costumes are an interesting idea for a new hobby to pursue.

I have very rarely worn a costume, and most of my life was spent wearing what I was told to or could afford or was appropriate for the activity. There was not a lot of choice or fun involved. Part of the PTSD recovery process is forming an identity and learning to discover "wants" and "likes" and "favorites". It is a slow process.

And I agree and since you brought that up I was just thinking (which is dangerous at times) that this might be an answer to meeting in church?... Stay with me Kathleen I'm about to lose it, then going to church would seem like a Comic-Con Convention?... Brother Glen:Roflmao

I struggle with jokes. This took me a minute too. :Laugh

I think we are going to see more creative types of masks and PPE, especially as facial recognition software advances. Someone please post the first online sermon with a pastor that defines "appropriate masks and PPE" for his congregation inside and outside church.

Underwear makers were some of the first factories that converted to mask making. I cannot wear a mask that I recognize as being made my a machine and with fabric that designed to make underwear. I actually saw a package with the days of the week on each one. Just NO!

I wonder how France is dealing with this, considering they have so many laws about "face covering".

evenifigoalone, there were huge anime conventions in the neighborhood that I used to live in. The convention hall was right next to my post office box, so for about 3 days, I would get to see all the wonderful costumes. I used to really enjoy that!

I tried not to be a bother or to be rude, but I used to ask some of the people if I could take a picture to send to a specific relative that really enjoyed it when I texted him pictures of certain characters. Some people appreciated that I admired their costume enough to single them out, but I always worried about being rude and invasive of their privacy.

evenifigoalone, do you like people to interact with you when you are in costume, or do you consider it an invasion of your privacy and time?

Yeah, so long as you wash it between major uses :) Fursuits can get pretty dirty and because they tend to be hot, you sweat into the fabric a lot. This is why many (most?) fursuiters wear balaclava when they suit.

I have an anime costume as well! I only have one, but there's a second one that I have my eye on.....what's nice about this next one is I'll be able to use my own hair, just cut short.
The one I have is Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, and the one I'm planning on getting is Joker from a video game called Persona 5. (Not Batman's Joker.) I'm not sure if you're familiar with either of those characters, but you may have at least seen an Ed cosplayer at some point.

I don't mind it! Part of the fun of fursuiting especially is seeing people smile--sometimes that's the main reason I bother to wear the fursuit, because I want so-and-so to see it. (I have a peer support group I go to on my days off of work, and I often wear my fursuit there.) As much fun as it can be, it's really inconvenient to wear for long periods, so I don't usually wear it just for the sake of wearing it, unless it's a short amount of time.

I am recovering from social anxiety disorder, so I may be a little awkward and shy when approached. But overall it's a fun experience and I understand that people get excited to see their favorite characters. And I like that that makes people happy.

    evenifigoalone,

Enjoy your hobby! I hope you have lots of fun and experience rejuvenation as a result of it. When I was younger, I was quick to judge things unclean and wasteful, and didn't understand the sin and waste of doing that. I have learned that God has a sense of humor and wants us to experience pleasure and joy and have time to rest. And he does not want us all to be carbon copies of each other.

Do you already have plans for the next anime convention? I would imagine that when you go there are many in suits. Having never heard of a convention like this, I'm curious what kind of products and services get promoted. Are there cartoonist, graphic artists, costumes? Just curious it sounds like an interesting way to share like interests.

I had plans for a couple anime conventions this year, but they got cancelled due to COVID. Next year is looking pretty bleak, too. But I do have plans whenever conventions do manage to get the greenlight again!
Conventions tend to have at least a bit of a merch hall, and you can find all kinds of small businesses with boothes there. It's my favorite part of going tbh. You can find all kinds of different things, including one of a kind stuffed animals or crafts, manga, Japanese snacks, t-shirts, pins (I have SO many pins), keychains, etc. The last anime convention I went to had a couple furry boothes that sold dog ears and tails (artificial, of course, and handmade), among other stuff.
There's also always an "artist alley" and you can buy prints from local artists and sometimes commission them right on the spot.
Conventions also have panels with different speakers, ranging from local artists or clubs to voice actors. Those are always interesting.
