I took just_ahead's advice and put Bible tabs on the Thru the Bible outlines at the front of my McGee Bible Bibles with Old Scofield 1917 Notes

I decided not to add tabs to the Bible section though. I did use the "Old Testament" and "New Testament" tabs on the Bible section, though and put those on the TOP of the pages, instead of the sides. Unlike the notes, the top of the Bible pages list the book title, so it makes sense to move the tabs I will use for the Bible there.

The Bible that I have is so much easier to use now, so I am happy to wait to do some serious research before choosing a Bible that I hope to have long-term, and that can serve as my ONLY Bible.

I have never used tabs before, and I don't think I want tabs on my next Bible, either. I am glad that I got to try them out for the first time, and I expect I will use them again on NOTES and in journals. They are absolutely the perfect solution to the dense and unlabeled McGee outlines.

What do others here think about Bible tabs? Do you use them? When and how? Any tips for people that are new or unfamiliar to Bible tabs?

I watched some youtube videos and that helped prepare me better than just reading the instructions.

Those who have chapters and verses numbered in their Bibles should be ashamed. :Wink

That is more or less what the maker of the video said but he could beat you in a race to any specific text, that is unless you have your bible memorized as to where every text is.

Congratulations on the addition of Bible tabs to the front section of your Thru the Bible (outlines and notes).

Some Bibles and resource books are easier to navigate than others. What you taught me can be applied to many books. THANK YOU!

I certainly will not be tabbing every book or even every part of books that I do tab, but tabbing is a tool that makes a critical difference at times. McGee's outlines with tabs and chapter numbers added to the margins are so much more usable.

SGO, you are letting me down here, bro. I had expected that by now you would have posted something like, 'I'm keeping tabs on this one.' Do better. :Wink

Several years ago, when I was a student, thumb index Bibles used to be popular. They used to drill the Bible to set up the thumb index tab. Some Bibles sold with thumb index tabs would lose the tab label -- the part with the name of the Bible books. As I recall, some very large preacher-type Bibles might have more than one tab per Bible book, with chapter ranges on the tabs.

Anyone else have any memories about Bible thumb index tabs?

I ended out rainbow tabbing the Bible chapters as well as the notes, and the speed with which I can now access the scripture is about 10 times as fast.

I have never had tabs, never mind rainbow tabs, and I did not know what I was missing. Yes, I'm sure the pages are going to rip, but this Bible is a working Bible, and I have stuff to get done right now that will get done better and faster with a Bible designed to do the work.

I was feeling lost without chapter headings and dates, but I am realizing that a more important context is lost when notes are added. I have a better spatial sense of scripture without notes that is magnified with the addition of tabs. Lengthy notes throw off any physical sense of the length of each section of scripture.

No tabs, or gold tabs would be more visually appealing, but not as efficient to work with. The tabs make the Bible seem more 3 dimensional. I not just flipping forward and backwards: the tabs are lined up in rows, and as I memorize their placement, I am navigating from top to bottom as well as front to back.

My Bible is large and there is room for 9 tabs in a row. Every once in a while, I do not have nine tabs in a row, because I wanted to place a specific tab at the top of the next row. Mostly it just worked out perfectly where tabs naturally fell.

The prophets are green, the gospels are blue, and the remaining NT is purple. There is a color change from green to blue as the NT starts, and the 4 gospels followed by Acts finish that row, with Romans starting the next row. The Gospels and Acts being grouped at the bottom of the row, and Romans starting the next row makes their placement pop. And although Acts and Romans are the same color, because Acts is at the bottom of a row, and Romans is at the top, navigating to them is so much faster than if the 2 tabs were next to each other.

Thank you for sharing your rainbow tabbing. I have seen people who have done something similar in the past.

    Why?

And what Bible doesn't supply chapter and verse numberings?

Exactly! If you watched the video, then you know he’s calling out this business of shaming people for using “Bible helps.” To emphasize how ridiculous that sort of shaming is, I sarcastically cited using chapter and verse numbers, which are not part of the original texts, but which even such shamers doubtless use. In other words, they are acting like hypocrites.

I have mixed feelings about Bible tabs. While they make it easier to locate the book or reference, they can make those pages easy to tear. I've had to add Scotch tape to support my tabs and repair the pages. It took me a while to learn not open to those pages using the tabs. Place your fingers away from the tabs when opening to the pages.

For ME right now with THIS Bible, I realized that I have no priority to preserve it. I am at a period of fast growth and I am likely to need something different before it is worn out. It is what I have now, and I need to tweak it into the most efficient tool possible. Tabs are undeniably the perfect solution for this bible for right now. But in the future, I can imagine tabs being the last thing that I would attach to fragile pages.

I know that using tabs is asking for trouble, but I do it for now with this Bible. I don't believe that I am being disrespectful to it or wasting it: it is paper and leather scrap, and I am made in the image of God. It is for my USE.

Tabs are tool. Tools have specific purposes and rules of use.

I see. No, I didn't watch the video. Thanks for the explanation.

Yes, the chapter and verse numberings are extremely necessary, even though not originally inspired. Anything one can do to help their journey through understanding the Scriptures, by all means do it.

    Good point.
