Just wondering. 1850s, I would have gone. By 1880, overpopulated and all good claims taken.

OK, so why the 1770's. :Wink

Just to clear up that little detail, from the same website (which looks interesting):

The wagon trains first began heading west in the early 1820s with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail from St. Louis, Missouri. The emigrant trains to Oregon and California had their origins in the mid-1840s, hitting their peak during the 1850s following the California Gold Rush.

After the Civil War, the transcontinental railroad was completed. Some emigrants still came by wagon train, but most of the newcomers arrived by rail. In fact, the railroad companies had been awarded large land grants, so they recruited people from the U.S. and Europe to head west by train and purchase land from them.

How long did the Old West wagon train era last?

Yeah, you have to click on it. :Wink However, if you used up your three “articles” like I did, you have to register for more.
Nice. Looks like a rather definitive website, being government and all. Here’s the summary page for their timeline:

Travel the Trail: Map Timeline 1821 - 1880 - Santa Fe National Historic Trail (U.S. National Park Service)

LOL. Well, now that would depend on what shy means in the context, e.g., “disposed to avoid a person or thing; cautious; wary" of something or someone; etc. Now, back to the trail. :Wink
