    I see no confusion.
The Federal government was made up of all States and the Federal government tolerated slavery. This is the sin the entire USA carried.
When John Brown tried to start a slave revolt, the Southern, slave holding States revolted and started a war to ensure that slavery would remain secure. Since they saw that the Federal government was going to eventually abolish slavery (like Britain had done) the South attacked (much like Japan at Pearl Harbor). The North responded and the war began.
The war was always about the abolishment of slavery. It was not about "states rights", which is a bogus attempt to change the moral ground. It was always about slavery.
Now, neither the South nor the North cared about the racist prejudice they both held toward persons of black skin. Today that prejudice still exists, though on a smaller scale as people inter-marry and blend.

So...no confusion on my part. Though you may be yet confused.

That was three years prior to the war. Who did the United States govt send to put down the revolt by the terrorist Brown?

No one. But, Brown was executed
Should the US have sent troops in on January 6, 2021 to put down the revolt at the US Capitol building when terrorists stormed the building?

This is because the South would not free the slaves and let them vote. Do you see the twisted and demented mindset of the Slave South?

You are the one very confused - as you are only looking at this from one - especially - a limited viewpoint.
and by that you are trying to make this a total spiritual argument. That is one thing on this Baptist Board -
but means absolute nothing to those who have no religious beliefs.
First the Fed govt is NOT made up of all Commonwealth/States - they are a cooperative - After the WBTS - the Fed govt started taking unconstitutional control of the States/Commonwealths.

The War was NOT just about Slavery:

"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." Abe Lincoln
for the link: Lincoln: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." @ AMERICAN DIGEST

There you go from old Abe himself - the War was NOT only about slavery.

Evidently - you were NOT at Pearl Harbor - that attack was noting like Ft Sumter.

and finally you stated that (in the above quote) "Federal government tolerated slavery" but then you said the war was all about slavery
So which is it. -- I am only confused due to your conflicting statements.

Finally, I do wonder where you grew up and currently live

I see slavery as an issue that must be viewed through the lens of the era in which it happened. Slavery was wrong. Slavery existed in most of the world at that time. Some nations had recently abolished it but it was common in that era. You can not treat slavery like it was a practice unique to the Southern United States. It was a cancer that was world wide.

I am looking at it from the only side God cares about. The moral side of right and wrong. It is the only side a Christian can stand on. Either slavery is morally abhorrent in its form taken in the US or it is not morally abhorrent. Nearly a million people were ordained to die because of this evil that was tolerated for 250 years on this continent. God dealt justly with us and God will deal justly with us regarding abortion as well.

Slavery was sin. That still does not mean the war was fought only about slavery.
