The British Gospel Standard folks are extra-Calvinistic . Most of the their articles of faith are sound . I differ with only 5 or so , but those 5 are significant . Many Gospel Standard people are godly persons . You've heard it said that Arminians are Calvinists when praying ? Well the GS people are really more evangelistic than their creed if the truth be known .

MD , the GS Church is Calvinistic but not of the same variety as most Reformed-minded people here are .

One of the most famous are J.K. Popham (it is rumored that A.W.Pink attended his church before coming to America for the first time.) Pastor Popham was against D.L. Moody's revivalistic form of evangelism as was John Kennedy ( a Scottish preacher Spurgeon adored .) He lived sometime between 1847 to 1940 I'm not sure .

Another is J.C. Philpot . I have several of his books . He is excellent when used with caution . His works are quite edifying . A.W. Pink has some valuable things to critique about Philpot and the GS Churches in general in his book on Man's Depravity . Philpot lived between 1802-1869 .

William Gadsby was a Strict Baptist but kind of started the demonination ( which doesn't really consider itself a denomination if you know what I mean . It's kind of like the Plymouth Brethren in that regard .) Gadsby lived between 1773-1644 .

B.A. Ramsbottom is a current preacher/author/historian with the GS today . He is well-respected inside and outside the GS Churches . The Banner of Truth has a number of his articles on file with high praise .

Here is a quote on their site that is posted above:
XXIX While we believe that the gospel is to be preached in or proclaimed to all the world, as in Mark 16:15, we deny offers of grace; that is to say, that the gospel is to be offered indiscriminately to all. (2 Cor. 4:3-4.) See Articles XXIV., XXVI.

How do you know who to offer the gospel too? I have always wondered this about the ones that beleive this.

I agree it is scary, but this is what the hyper calvinists believe.
I really want to know how they chose who they share grace with.

I prefer to go by what scripture says in Acts 17:11, "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so."

And then I take a look at what Hebrews 13:7 says to do.

Hebrews 13:7 "Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith."

The result of their conduct is the result of their thinking put into practice. That is where their thinking is eventually revealed. Too many follow someone who has not lived out their faith.

From my understanding this article means the Gospel is proclaimed to all but grace is not given to all. Grace is given thru Christ to the elect, the reprobate are not included in the covenant and are not given grace.

That's how I understand it after reading Brine and other high Calvinists.

I found this, it may add light to understanding this article:

The gospel is never offered. It is preached, to one and all who will listen.

no gospel standards posting right now.
but, reading the last paragraph of your quote (post # 11) I suppose you might look at them as being near kin to Primitive Baptists, and seeing as you are from Canada, are there gospel standards churches up there ?

JM,you have resurrected more formerly dead threads in a matter of days than the former record-holder was able to do in months. Who was the former record-holder?...Me.

I appreciate the GS folks. I think they are in error in some of their doctrine --but time has vindicated that by-an-large, they are a godly group and their history is a fascinating. I love their literature. Earlier in this thread (from back in 2007) I had mentioned J.K. Popham (1847-1937). His sermons were meaty. If folks would read his sermons they would be edified. As I had mentioned --A.W. Pink probably attended his Galeed chapel for a while, before coming to America the first time.

Do you have any of his books put out by GS pub? Books such as Stand Fast,Valiant for Truth and According to Mine Heart?

His ministry reminds me of a non-GS man --Joseph Irons (1785-1852). Pastor Irons ministered at the non-conformist Grove chapel. His sermons were beyond excellent. Spurgeon thought very highly of him --Irons' widow attended New Park for a while.

I get a kick out of what Pastor Irons called Baptists:"litigious agitators of the amphibious kind." LOL!

I appreciate B.A. Ramsbottom very much. Do you have any of his books? I am interested in his biblical literature for children (but he has some wonderful bios also). Do you have Sing Aloud In Jesus' Name?

Off-topic again --do you have Hart's hymns?

I forgot to say that April 3rd is the anniversary of the death of Joseph Irons (died in 1852).

Also,so I won't be misunderstood by some here: I do not endorse a number of things doctrinally by the Gospel Standard folks. And I probably wouldn't feel comfortable in their services for a number of reasons. But their literature is to-notch. As I said : B.A. Ramsbottom is a wonderful writer --very edifying and biblical.

As much as A.W. Pink agreed with much of the Gospel Standard doctrines --he was opposed to a number of items from their confession of faith which they added in 1876. I am in agreement with him on that. As AWP stated, they emphasize the promises of God yet minimize his precepts --if mention is made at all.

Since 2007 I've had the chance to chat with plenty of Gospel Standard Baptists (from now on GSBs) and Primitive Baptists (PrBs) due to my YouTube channel, blog, the Gadsby's Hymns facebook page, the Nehemiah Coxe facebook page, the Silas Durrand facebook page, banjo stuff and twitter JM_1689. It seems we share common beliefs. I've considered myself a 1689'er but with a few exceptions that tend to place me in the high calvinist category.

I've read a lot of the GSB stuff online and owned the 4 vol. set of Popham's sermons but gave them to a dear brother. Over on the Puritan Board I had the pleasure of corresponding with a few nice GSBs but they left do to the strict confessional standards. I liked posting on PB though.

As for Hart's hymns...YES! I own a copy of Gadsby's printed in the UK by Gospel Standard Trust and love it. I play my banjo and go thru the hymnal. Reformation Heritage Books sells some GSB titles and there is always Gospel Mission of course. I use TrueGospel.net a lot and like how they post what was written without changing the Bible version or language like some other sites.

    Yours in the Lord,

    jm
PS: I didn't mean to resurrection so many old threads but I was using my phone to read the forum...apologies.

He is a most fortunate fellow. I like reading his sermons on-line. But it's not the same as having them in book-form.

How would you compare the preaching of Jospeh Irons with that of Popham? Of course J.I. was not a GSB.
