No one would respond in the Baptist Colleges / Seminaries section so I figured I see if some one knows.

What is being taught about tithing these days at Baptist Colleges or Seminaries?

Probably depends on the seminary, if not the professor. I know of profs who teach tithing and profs who teach giving as the Lord prospers, etc. at the seminary I attend.

Your question is pretty broad. Who is in all baptist schools to know? Depends on the school and on the professor. I do not think there is one set answer to your question.

They teach what the professors believe the Bible teaches about tithing.

Since Baptist colleges and seminaries vary widely, and I suspect most schools do not require their professors to teach a specific view of tithing, there is no way to give an answer that will be consistently accurate.

What is the point of your question?

If you (individual) know of the teaching of a scool(singular) post that. Not interested in the scholl name. Just trying to get a feel what is being taught.

The Texas Baptist university, where I earned my undergraduate theology degree, did not have a standard teaching on tithing.

One professor (who emphasized spiritual disciplines) believed that giving finances back to God was a natural response to a transformed life. He emphasized giving according to the leading of the Spirit and according to the measure of God’s financial blessings in your life.

Another professor (who taught philosophy, systematic theology, and the life and teachings of Jesus) believed that Christian financial stewardship was the responsibility of all who claimed to follow Christ. He did not advocate a certain amount or percentage, but stressed that Christians should give according to the needs of others and one’s ability to give.

I believe both of them are correct even though the emphases are slightly different.

The lack of response might indicate that there is no teaching one way or another. In seminaries, there are typically about two OT classes and two NT classes.....some schools have more, some less. In these, they deal with major themes, and very often, most likely, not get to every conceivable area of teaching. One could come up with literally hundreds of concepts similar to tithing that is taught in the bible, and there is simply not enough time in college and seminary classes to discuss them all. So while the issue of money is important, so are the others.

Lest we think "how in the world could they get through seminary without studying ________?" (fill in the blank), then consider that the "standard" seminary degree is about 93 to 96 graduate hours. There's simply a lot of things to learn (hebrew grammar, for example) and not enough time to teach it.

    Humble

    I find that interesting.
I would have hoped that the schools would need to teach administration and financing of the church. Not that those are the most important things.

My Texas Baptist university had a class on Church Administration. I don't recall if it was offered at seminary.

I dont remember it being directly taught that we should do it one certain way. It is debatable whether or not we teach tithing as it really is in the Bible. I remember emphasis being placed on a wholistic approach to stewardship.

I don't remember any specific teaching on tithing at my Bible college either. I went to Maranatha BBC.

You mentioned classes on Church finances and administration, and that is sort of a separate issue from tithing, isn't it? I know the pastoral studies had a course or two on church finances and/or administration. I didn't take those classes.... [IMG] ....so I don't know what or if anything was taught about tithing specifically.

    Hi bapmom,

    Glad to see your post.
I have been told by some that the tithe is the only source of finances that a church should seek.

In my classes on administration of the church (the "business" side of it), nothing was mentioned one way or the other. Some of my teachers spoke of tithing when it was appropriate to the course material.

My opinion is that most Baptists believe in tithing. Whether or not they are tithers is another question. I taught two classes on finances in my church and there are people who believe regular giving of 10 dollars a week is a tithe.

Thanks for the input Bro Ian.

I know some people for which $10 would be way over a tithe as they are very poor.

Another thing I have seen is that preachers in some churches make people feel bad because they are not able to give (not what the preacher thinks they should anyway)

I don't know what is being taught in Baptist's colleges on the tithing law, but tithing is a part of the Old covenant law, plain and simple. There is NO COMMAND for the Christian church to give one tenth of their goods to the "storehouse" of God, which is in this case the local church.

Tithing was an old testament command for the children of Israel to bring one tenth of their money, livestock and crops to the storehouse that the Levitical priesthood had for the PRIESTS to live on throughout the year.

Christians today are not commanded to do the same. Could you imagine bringing farm animals and crops into the church building for your minister? That would be amusing.
