Trial Begins for Polygamist Warren Jeffs

    The trial of Warren Jeffs is underway in St. George, Utah. Jeffs is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the nation's largest polygamist sect. The trial centers on the arranged marriage of an underage teenager to her cousin. But the prosecution's case against the 51-year-old polygamist is not considered a certainty.
    The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes that in order for men to reach the highest degree of glory in heaven, they must have at least three wives. The man designated as the group's prophet holds enormous sway because it is he who decides whether a follower is worthy of more wives. This power is at the heart of the prosecution's case against Jeffs.

    That's their theory, is that he wielded a great deal of religious mind control over his followers. And that his word was the equivalent of the word of God, so if they didn't obey him, they were disobeying God," says Aric Cramer, a Utah criminal defense attorney who has followed the case.

    This is scary to think someone has this kind of control over people. I know a lot of people have drank the cool-aide I just can not see people believing this.

    Your right the prosicutions case is not a certenty. BUT not because Jeffs holds any control over anyone on the jury. Correct me if I am wrong but, I do not believe anybody on the jury is FLDS. The jury will be mostly LDS people by nature of where the trial is held. LDS people do not like Jeffs they consider him a false prophet who broke off the "one true church" and directly teaches against it. They have more distain for him then other religions who are not affiliated with Mormonisem. It is not that they do not believe in poligamy, they do, but the LDS church has said that poligamy is on hold for now, as per god. They do not like Jeffs because his close affiliation with LDS church brings up the LDS past practices to the world and makes them look bad to most people who do not know there is a difference between FLDS and LDS. For example, I have never been to another state and not been asked, "How many wifes do you have."

    The case is not certan because they are prosicuting him for accessory to rape. This charge has only been used for someone who physically help rape somebody. It is for somebody who held a victim down while somebody else raped. Jeffs counceled the young woman to return to her illegal marrage, where the rape was happening. This kind of involvement has never been tried before.

    My guess. Jeffs does not stand a chance of getting off.
