Let's see . It was before Boice or even Boyce . It didn't start with Lloyd-Jones or even Pink . Spurgeon didn't begin it nor Ryle . Did Whitefield , Edwards or Gill get this going ? No . It had to be one of the Puritans then . But there were too many with the same convictions . Was it Owen ? No . I have it now . Of course . The Reformer John Calvin had to have come up with Calvinism . How could it be any other ? Before him Luther was a stronger Calvinist . Was it Huss ? No . How about Wycliffe ? No . Oh, it was his mentor Bradwardine . No . This is getting difficult . Was it Peter Waldo . No. Gotteschalk got the whole ball rolling didn't he ? No , go back furthur . How about Bede ? No . Wait a minute . I have it now -- Augustine , right ? It has to be him . No . Well then the apostle Paul is the only one left . Go back a lot more than that to the Lord himself . The Scriptures declare these truths . It was not a man-made invention at all . The Word of God is Calvinistic for want of a better term to describe these precious doctrines .

That's why we of the reformed persuasion call ourselves "Five-Point Biblicists". Anyone who reads Romans and wonders about God's sovereignty, etc, has the questions answered!!

What Baptist would want to be named after Calvin? [IMG]

(BTW, is Guk-Su as spicey as Kimchi? )

Was it Calvin who said that Jesus died only for the elect? No, he never said that. Hmmm.

    Hi Dr. Bob ,

Guk-Su is also a noodle in Korea . It can be cooked in a spicy way or without that flavoring .

But Guk-Su the place is an isolated , kind of remote area that is considered a resort in this country .

Though I differ with Calvin on a number of points especially his ideas on paedobaptism -- I don't think a Baptist holding to the doctrine of grace should feel awkward about being named Calvin . I have much more in common with a number of conservative Presbyterians for instance than many Baptists -- who ,though considering themselves conservative -- differ enough from some core biblical doctrines , that I feel akinship more with the Presbyterians .

The Doctrines of Grace are the Doctrines of the Bible, the Doctrines of God. Sadly many, perhaps most, Baptists have departed from these Biblical Doctrines.

The gift of Grace available to every man, woman, and child who will call upon the Lord is still taught today by the true child of God. Grace is a gift that is given to 'whosoever will', not just a chosen elect.

The words 'whosoever', 'whoso', and 'all' are wonderful words found within great promises written in the Word of God. And because these words are in the Word of God, they are truth. Eternal life is for everybody. Not just those who Calvin's croonies say it is for.

No, the Bible does not teach that salvation is available to anyone. Those who "want" it, ask for it and receive it, were predestined to do so.

SFIC Amen. As I'm sure you have learned by now , you can tell a Calvinist but you can't tell em much.So it's just not worth the battle.

    Amen, Plain Old Bill.

It is sad that the learning puffs some people up so much that they are never coming to the knowledge of the truth

It's funny but I find that people that dig in and study scripture more and more are coming or have come to the realization of the truths of the doctrines of grace, and how the OP is correct. Scripture declares those truths all throughout I believe. :)

But surely the same could be said of non-Calvinists, at least some of them. For example, I and others have tried to tell non-Calvinists that I don't base my belief on John Calvin or his writings, yet over and over again some NCs write things like: "They would rather base their faith on the works of John Calvin than on the Word of God." And in spite of me and others saying emphatically that we do hold to "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved", we still keep getting told by some NCs that we believe we are saved by our election, whether or not we believe.

You needed to add some more misrepresentations by the NC's .

Calvinists believe God forces people into salvation which violates their freedom of will .

Calvinists with their predestinarian views are akin to holding to Islamic-like fate .

Calvinists think that all people are robots -- pre-programmed by God .

Calvinists believe that since Christ died only for the elect then that makes God A) unloving B) unfair C) a monstrous tyrant .D) that limits God

Calvinists think they are the only elect ones .

Calvinists have rewritten the Bible with important texts twisted just so that it fits in with their peculiar theology .

Calvinists have no love for the lost . They would rather spend all their time arguing their blasphemous doctrines .

Those who study Calvin need to understand that they are studying writing that is less than infallable

What really turns me off is not Calvin himself nor his writing--its folks who go on like Calvin holds a fourth part of the Godhead

I came out of heresy about a year ago. A works based salvation. One of my first introductions to Calvinism was the dvd "Amazing Grace" with Sproul, et.al. In it they describe Historical Calvinism as the 5 points of Calvinism, written to respond to the Remonstrants. That was all news to me, I had never heard of Calvinism. I clearly see the Biblical foundation, or Sola Scriptura, for "TULIP." To me, the doctrine of TULIP gives all the glory to God. Not to man. Salvation is not based on the will of man, it is not based on my choice, but on God who chooses to have mercy, and His Grace.
