Which Came First?

    For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. -- 1 Cor. 7:14

    So, which comes first? sanctification? or justification?

    and i was worried that this would turn in to a calvin vs. non-calvin debate:saint:

    Ok, I'll play nice.

    There is a justified spouse and a sanctified spouse. Justification must come first for one spouse, then the other is sanctified because of it.

    Sancitified, meaning they are "put aside" by God and receive certain blessings because of the justified spouse. Much like Egypt was blessed when Abraham was living there.

    Of course, there is always the chance that I could be wrong. :tongue3:

    In this passage, sanctification does, but remember that sanctification does not always refer to post salvation growth.

    How about this passage:
    And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 cor. 6:11

    or 2 Thes 2:13? But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

    Actually, in the context of 'eternal salvation' or the new birth, all these happen simultaneously. There is probably a logical order, but there is not a theological order per se, if I may.

    However, as another said, all sanctification is not directly related to salvation. Case in point, your original post, about the wife 'sanctifying' an unbelieving husband. And 'holy' and 'sanctified' are from the same Greek word, I believe, as well.

    What about it? I am not sure what the question is so I am not sure how to answer.

    Amy, I thought your answer was right, and was saying the same thing I said. Perhaps I misunderstood you.

    1 Cor 7:15 means that an unsaved spouse and the children receives some blessing from God by virtue of their saved spouse. It is not salvation, and it is not post salvation growth.
