Over the past years many schools have changed their mascots which were Indian inspired, such as Warriors, Braves, Red Raiders and ect. Here in NY, the State Board of Regents all but required high schools to drop any reference to Indians. I know of at least one school that kept its nickname of Warrior, but instead of using an Indian, they know use a Roman Warrior. ( suppose all citizens of Italian decent should be protesting.)

Anyways, with that said, what about schools that use the Devil as a mascot. Such as the Red Demons, Deacon Demons, and ect. Would you allow your son to play on a sports team if his uniform said "Red Demons"

PS, was anybody here ever in George Patton's own Second Armored Division. Our division patch, in the form of a triangle with a tank has the phrase "HELL ON WHEELS".

    Thoughts?

We have had the debate going for a while about one of the schools here in Murfreesboro (where I work).

    School Name: Riverdale High School
    Nickname: Warriors
    Mascot: Chief Win-em-all
    Stadium: Tomahawk Stadium
    Field: Warrior Field
    Location: Warrior Drive
They even have the tee-pee from the movie Dances With Wolves on the football field down at one end. Whenever they make a touchdown smoke comes out the top.

Frankly, I see nothing wrong with it. My family has strong Indian heritage and I'm not offended at all. I went to one of their games about three weeks ago and had a blast! It would be ridiculous to force them to change their name. It's their identity and has been so for many years.

Now as for teams being named after devils, demons, etc....that is totally different. I would never support them. If they want to be named that it's fine. I have no control or say in it. In fact, Lebanon (where I live) has the Lebanon High Blue Devils. When I was in marching band in high school they had a marching competition that my school was entered in. The name of the contest was the Blue Devil Invitational. I have not been there ever since. Most of the teens at our church go to that school as well and they hate the mascot. I would be in full support if they ever decided to change it.

I would never allow my son or daughter :D to play on a sports team with a name/mascot like devil or demon. That's my two cents worth :)

There is a lot of truth to deacon demons. Hmmmm.

I grew up with the Anadarko Warriors.
I was at college with the Bison.
    Indian names don't bother me.

    Demons? eh.

We lost our fight in Illinois to keep Chief Illiniwik as the mascot for the Fighting Illini team. :tear:

It is sad because we considered it a place of honor, not having any negative connotations.

For the life of me, I can't understand how these minority groups keep winning all the battles! :BangHead:

I would not let my kids/grandkids play on any team named demon or devil.

Anyone own a Dirt Devil vacuum?

Would you consider the West Virginia Mountianeers an offensive ethnic slur?

I am a Contractor and we have the painting account with a school district in a nearby town.

One of the schools we paint is a Middle School. It's name includes "Warriors" which is represented by an Indian.

This Indian was painted on the stairway in the 80's, when the school was brand new. I attended school there, I remember.

The complaint came from a bus driver, apparently the Indian has too big of a nose. He is wearing

the feathers and has long hair, but it's the nose which bothers her. It's a side view. It went to the

District and she lost (she is Indian). We repainted the Indian, including his nose.
