Frenchy, unfortuately, today you can't judge a person's age by their maturity. Ever since the 1960's we've been taught to HATE maturity, and that the old are in the way and foolish, so many of us AVOID letting go of childish things and like to pretend we're still teenagers or "cool" in some other way. Not like Paul:

1 Cor 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

1 Cor 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

J.D.
Not 37 (49), no degree (like Spurgeon [IMG] ), and not a D.J.
</font>
Since Frenchy's post was directed at me (and, by the way, isn't there some BaptistBoard rule against implying that someone isn't saved?), I assume your response is, too.

I don't pretend I'm a teenager. In fact, my friends joke that I'm a seventy year old man in a thirty-six year old man's body.

Why do you believe that appreciating good artistry is "childish"?

And, by the way, for those of you who believe that I defend CCM because I listen to it or because I like it, please check out the many threads in the music forums where I ridicule it or complain about the way they stress style over substance and their completely misguided views of "ministry", or my thread in the prayer request forums where I pointed out that my church's growing propensity toward CCM and pop music in worship is one of the reasons I left that church.

Now Playing: Sally Taylor – “Tomboy Bride”

Mike McK,

Let me ask you something...

If Jesus were here today, do you think He would be promoting the Grateful Dead? or Marsha Ball? or any of the other ungodly artists and songs you are promoting?

I disagree. A careful reading of the text shows that it is referring specifically to their pagan religious practices.

Of course, if you don't see a problem with taking song lyrics out of context in order to try to manufacture a point, is it really that big a stretch to believe that you'd do the same with scripture?

Since we know that Jesus (as well as Paul) quoted secular poets and philosophers of His day, I believe that He would be aware of the music scene and I tend to believe that He would appreciate different kinds of music.

What artists and songs do you believe I'm promoting?

The only artists I've mentioned are those I play on my Live365 station (and they were all Christians) and those I've said that I'm listening to. Simply mentioning that I'm listening to an artist is not "promoting them."

When you post something like now playing: Marsha ball - let me play with your poodle, or Grateful Dead, Marty Robbins, or any other, you are promoting that artist and that song.

Hmmm....that would be an unhealthy church. Kind of like a church in which the views of the younger generation are discarded...you get the point.

How about a biblical church in which we all esteem one another and serve each other in love?

Come visit my church, JD. Sounds like you need a place to heal from your hurts. Our youth are valued...and they serve. Next month--they are serving our Senior Adult group at their monthly meeting....cooking, doing the program (a HYMN SING, no less) and cleaning up.

Wow, are you angry, JD.

SFIC...your "be ye separate" passage refers to believers being yoked with unbelievers. Either....
(a) You're using the verse out of context; or
(b) You're saying that anyone who worships to modern music is unsaved.

And, for those of you joining us late, I'll re-re-repeat this:

Our ministry uses old music, new music, and ancient music. It honors God and is centered around Him. It is doctrinally sound. It is musically excellent. At my church, God is being glorified. Jesus is being preached. Souls are being saved...and staying the course, long-term (I've been here six years...I know). That is spiritual fruitfulness...

"By your fruits ye shall know them."

I also thank God for those of you who are bearing fruits in more traditional settings. God is glorified there as well. But quit attacking something that God is using.

No, simply saying that I'm listening to an artist is not promoting that artist.

If I said, "Hey, I'm listening to Wayne Hancock and man, that is one fine album. I think you ought to go out and pick it up", that would be promoting an artist.

Hey, by the way, it's Wayne "the Train"'s birthday today.

What song do you believe that I'm promoting?

No, it has nothing to do with being double minded.

There's nothing "double minded" about having problems with the way that the Christian music industry does business, but not believing that Christian music is inherently evil.

I might not like the way that things are run at the management level and I might have big problems from an artistic point of view, but that has nothing to do with judging it on a moral basis.

No, the reader who sees a supposed christian posting that he is listening to the Grateful Dead gets one of two pictures:

1. It is ok to listen to Rock and Roll
2: That guy is a christian?

It's fine to listen to rock and roll.

But what Biblical basis do you have for judging my walk with Christ based on what somebody else does?

We are to walk as Christ walked. Not as the world walks.

And no, it is not ok to listen to rock and roll

Then why bother posting it if you say you are not pormoting an artist?</font>
It's something that we do in the music forums. I understand that many of you in this thread don't post in those forums, so you may not be aware of that.

Normally, I don't do this outside of the music forums, but since this is a music thread and since I believe it will probably be moved to the music forums, I did.

You're drawing attention to the alleged evils of CCM. Are you promoting CCM?

How is appreciating different kinds of music "walking like the world"?

Sure it is. If you believe that it's not, then tell us why it's not.

Our Wednesday night lineup this week:

"Great is the Lord in Zion" (uptempo recitation of Psalm 99:1-3, using our entire praise band and 3-part harmony).
"Romans 12:1-2" (a straight-up scripture arrangement using guitars, piano, drums, and acoustic percussion)
"It Is Well With My Soul" (yes, that Hymn. Keyboard Strings, guitar, congas, and piano).
"Deliver me" (an adaptation of Psalm 31...guitar and cello).

We are talking about "baggage: letting God have your luggage." I personally know of several kids who are struggling with some severe emotional issues who will be in attendance--brought by their Christian friends. I have four students who will not be in the room...they will spend the hour in prayer next door. I can't wait to see what God will do.

I don't post this except for two reasons...I'm proud of how my students have learned to let God use their gifts and abilities...and I want to re-iterate that for many here, this is not an all-or-nothing, either-or situation...but rather one that requires prayerful discernment. I've done that. God has granted us His peace about it.

Notice, if you will: the new, the old, the ancient. Hymns of peace and comfort, celebrations of victory, and spiritual songs of instruction and exhortation.

Not a doubt we're doing what God wants our church to do Wednesday night.

Scripture commands us to judge. We are to base our judgment on Scripture.

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. (John 7:24)

BTW--Posting what you are playing is becoming redundant.

But many of your judgements are based on superficial things.

For instance, you don't know me. You don't know anything about my walk with Christ or what the Holy Spirit has put on my heart, but because I can appreciate the artistry of a certain musician, I'm somehow less of a Christian than you are.

You didn't ever bother to ask me why I like their music I do or how I feel about things that they may sing about that you believe to be at odds with Christianity.

You didn't try to talk to me or find out anything about how I view this music or feel about it, or anything about my lifestyle. You just jumped right in and started judging me unfairly without knowing any of the facts. That seems to be the very thing Jesus was warning against in that passage.

Certainly many of the judgements of the av1611 site that you all rally around are unrighteous judgements.

To condemn someone by associating them with another person whom they have nothing to do with? How in the world is that a "righteous judgement"?
