Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 9:12 a.m. ESTNew York Sen. Hillary Clinton has put in for a Purple Heart award - and she received the decoration yesterday.

'The former first lady garnered the award without being wounded in combat - or sustaining any kind of injury at all - as is usually the case with Purple Heart recipients.

Neither has Clinton ever served in the military, though she once claimed in a TV interview she tried to join the Marines.

Instead, Mrs. Clinton received a symbolic award from the Military Order of the Purple Heart "in recognition of her inspirational leadership and dedicated service to America’s military service members and America’s veterans."'

It is a slap in the face to all veterans, just as it would be had it been given to President Bush.

I just did a google news search and this is the only account of this incident I can find. I hate to be skeptical, but I am. I need a bit more than this one source before I say anything else.

Well, if true, at least the next president will have one military honour.

From the initial post, I thought she was awarded the real deal. In reading down the thread, I find all she got was a plaque from the equivalent of an alumni association. This doesn't make the Purple Heart Association look all that discerning, but the Senator from New York didn't get something she didn't deserve.

Hillary can't win the white house. I am sure of it. She is way too polarizing. Unless, there are more radical feminist than I think there are.

I agree with you. I thought it "appeared" she was awarded the purple heart too and that is apparently not the case.

I'm not a big Clinton fan -- him or her either.

The reason it appearsto be the Purple Heart is that it was written that way. Look what those wascally Clintons are up to now!"

Whatever you think of her, she has supported wounded veterans as a senator.

BTW: I also doubt NewsMax was being truthful in saying she "has put in for a Purple Heart award." The association presents the award annually to one member of Congress.

The story in the OP is incredibly misleading. It implies that Mrs Clinton is receiving a Purple Heart. That's patently false.

The award she received is the Inspirational Leadership Award which a private organization gives to a different member of Congress annually.

There are many things we can debate about Mrs Clinton, but to debate her on the basis of topic is simply inappropriate. I'm not surprised that the information in the OP is s blatantly false. It's Newsmax, afterall. They're just below WND on the tabloid ladder.

I agree that the headline from Newsmax is misleading; I posted it verbatim in the subject line. I think that the headline and intro was meant to be satirical. However, the story itself accurately parallels the news release on Sen. Clintons website, and explicitly states that ' Mrs. Clinton received a symbolic award from the Military Order of the Purple Heart "in recognition of her inspirational leadership and dedicated service to America’s military service members and America’s veterans."'
This is no different than the daily practices of many large-circulation newspapers. The OP is not "patently false", as it goes on to accurately report the nature of Clinton's award.

What do you expect from Newsmax, a known neocon PR outlet and echo chamber JohnV?

It's nothing of the sort. Newsmax is tabloid yellow journalism, even moreso that WorldNet Daily.

You know JohnV at first I disageed with you about WND. I have since seen the light brother...so to speak. I figure both hold pretty close to the neocon line of thought or neoliberal propaganda. :D

I can tell you with some assuredness, mainline conservatives know better. Only hyperconservative extremists take those rags seriously. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of hyperconservative extremists [IMG]

Newsmax is tabloid yellow journalism, even moreso that WorldNet Daily.

I have found these sites to be more credible than the New York Times or The Washington Post, which publish outlandish accusations on the front page, but retractions of the same on page 28... That is yellow journalism at its worst.

IMO, it's part of the "hawk" and/or "conservative" positioning game her advisors are having her play out.

Her approval is at 29% (heard it somewhere today on radio) right now. Like I've said before, she will not run. Not even the Dem. Party will support her. She has too much baggage without even dredging any more up.
