They do have a Southern Gospel beat to them, so probably not.

I agree with # 1. That's about the only thing I see that has any shred of Biblical basis to it.

I am in the same boat as SFIC. I co-wrote one back in 1996 that quotes directly Romans 11:36

That's the real problem - people like this spouting out things that have no Scriptural basis, trading the truths of God for the traditions of men. God will not hold those who do this guiltless.

What Biblical basis is there to support #1?

PastorSBC beat me to it... While I agree somewhat with that opinion, I don't know that it is a Biblical absolute.

Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. - Hebrews 2:12

Nowhere in the Bible do you find anyone listening to music (except Saul - who was trying to use music to soothe his spirit when an evil spirit was sent to him from the Lord. This was only a temporary fixed and eventually no longer worked.)

Constantly God is admonishing us to "sing to yourselves", "teach and admonish one another" - the verb is always to sing, praise, make, etc, not to sit back and watch a performance.

At the last supper, Peter didn't sing a special; they sang an hymn.

My essay has been totally misquoted since I never said to sing no songs before 1956, but rather that we should PRIMARILY sing songs that are tried and true for the purpose of not letting the music drift from the right kind of music.

    Sincerely,

    Pastor Steven L Anderson

Nowhere in the Bible? Come on sanderson... surely you don't believe that!!!

1 Chronicles 23:5 Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.

Were these just sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal with no clarity?

2 Chronicles 7:6 And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of musick of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.

Psalms 150:4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

You can't argue from silence pastor. The Bible never says to barbecue steaks after an anniversary service either. In fact - I think we have Bible evidence against having a church barbecue - "What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
    " - 1 Corinthians 11v22

And you did say primarily sings songs older than 50 years old. You have no Bible support for that. How did anyone ever sing a newer song if it has to be tried and proven true to use it. If no one had ever used songs they would never had been tried and proven. What songs are we robbing from the next generation by not trying them now?

Isaiah 38:20 The LORD was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD.

Sounds like there may be music going on here. And it God's house. Or maybe, just maybe, and I am reaching here... no one was playing these instruments but just singing to them.

Is that one ripped out of your Bible, sanderson?

    Sanderson1769...

So, let me see if I have this right.

Its OK to make music in worship to God...but not OK for anyone to listen to that music as it is made?

So if someone wants to make some music they have to go out in forest to make that sure nobody listens to them, and is guilty of sin?

And of course, that brings up the old problem of...

"If a musical group makes music in a forest, do they really...." :D

I used to play in a praise and worship group at a previous church. We got up and played music for anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how the Holy Spirit desired, and regularly people would be led to stand with their arms raised in worship to God, singing along with us.

So...in your view were we sinning before the congregation began worshipping with us, but we stopped sinning once they did?

    "Pastor" sanderson...

In the name of humane treatement, I propose that we take your exegesis out back and have it shot.

If you'd like to borrow any of my material on interpreting the Bible properly, I'll be glad to loan it to you.

    Wow.

I am still waiting for an example of scripture that shows the "right" kind of music.

This is also why I left the local IFB camp.
too many "preacher boys" that know nothing.

Psalm 150, "Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse. Praise Him for His mighty deeds; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. Praise Him with trumpet sound; Praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with timbrel and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe. Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!"

You mean to say that Pslam 150 was never inspired?
