This basically is what the issue is based solely on. You start out lumping styles of music together withalcohol, smoking, indecent clothes and "lust" all around, and since we all know that those things are unscriptural, then that proves that "we all should know" that these styles are bad. But that puts the cart before the horse. No one has shown that the contemporary styles in question are in fact like those sins, and that the traditional styles we are used to are good, or non-worldly. It all then boils down to a cyclical argument of "associations" with what we have seen people in the world use it for, and then ridiculous claims of physical health or moral effects, or simply that God just doesn't like it.
Sorry, but nobody gets to put that forth as a valid scriptural argument.

Shiloh said "Look at the bums that sing it, that should tell you enough!"
also "I can give you a lot of Scripture to prove a person WILL change when Christ comes into ones heart."

mmhmm... so all christians are supposed to be "non-bums" ?
all christians should be wearing suits?
all christians should... ya know what? that makes me utterly sick. you sicken me - your thinking on this subject is very repulsive.

    let me explain.
yes a person will change when Jesus gets into their heart.
spiritually change. not all the time will it be a physical change.

    got that?
so dont pick on the bums. why dont you go and meet some of these so called "christian rappers" and have a chat with them?

or would that be a huge waste of your time? to try and understand both spectrums of life?

    HUH? WHAT IS WITH THAT?

stupid reasoning. its lovely how you put down the people behind hip-hop...

did you know read the lyrics to the song i posted? "we don't live for hip-hop/ hip-hop lives for us"

you know what that means? it means they aren't living for hip-hop... so what are they living for? JESUS CHRIST! READ THE LYRICS!

its also nice how you stereotype all rap and hip-hop regardless of the heart of the person that is displaying it.

God does not have a respect of persons.
    so neither should you.

    what changes? the spiritual.

who cares if they're labelled as a christian 'bum'? who cares?
what's so wrong with displaying the gospel with bass in the background? huh?

i feel like posting a couple songs from john reuben to display some hypocrisy of christians today... i did once already and the thread was closed.

    i will soon. just wait.

its sickening to read yours and SFIC's posts and read that hip-hop rock and whatever else originated in the world....

did it? i thought everything originated from God?

no christian rapper has ever mentioned that lust, alcohol, and such like - are good.

never have they said they are good. never have they promoted it. never have they.

they used to be into that - and Christ brought them out of it.
they do not. i repeat. they do not promote the worldly lifestyle.

they way i see people who say that rap/hip-hop/rock&roll are of the devil...

the way i see it - they are the ones who look on the outside of things.
    correct me if im wrong.

    isn't it true though?

Man cannot hold onto the things that feed the fleshly lusts and expect God to be pleased.

    Gekko -

I somewhat agree with the message in the initial post. But I have a question or two.

Why intentionally make a message like that so full of strange spellings and odd wording? Seems like the fans of the modern versions of scripture should be crying foul.

Where do we draw the line to determine what is "christian" music and what is not? My little brother is into "christian" death metal. I have listened to some of it and concluded that some of the words were great, but the music was so dark and depressing.

It seems to me you need more than good lyrics to make good music. If I took a nice, big, juicy steak and threw it into a pile of manure, would you want to eat it? Pardon the analogy, I'm sure some Hip Hop music is nice, but it all sounds like "gangstas" to me.

Maybe we should consider Galations chapter 5 when we judge such things. Does it motivate the works of the flesh, or the fruits of the spirit?

    Just a thought

SFIC, You still haven't proven that a particular style "feeds fleshy lusts", and that traditional doesn't. Just repeating that over and over doesn't make it so.

and i completely agree with that.

i get uptight against those who stereotype all hip-hop/rock&roll saying that its all to motivate the works of the flesh.

so hip-hop makes me want to freestyle dance. big deal! who cares! dance to whatever music. i dance to hymns for crying out loud!

as long as it does not portray sexual desires or anything close - then its fine.
    -------------------

EricB - a lie told often enough, becomes the truth.
    a false truth.

lie = hip-hop feeds fleshly desires. - it will if you let it - because of the LYRICS. the lyrics play a huge part in the music - otherwise it'd all be techno/rave style.
if told enough - it'll be the truth to that person.

but to stereotype... mmm. no. that's not reasonable.
what if i start stereotyping that everybody that wears glasses are fundamentalists and legalists. how's that? (i wear glasses by the way...)

its not right. a style of music will only feed fleshly lusts if you allow it to.
i believe SFIC is focusing more on the actual music apart from the words.

looking on the outside rather then the content.
sorry SFIC - its how i see your side of the argument - now if you wish to correct me - please do. without stereotyping.

    Gekko,

You say you freestyle dance and see nothing wrong with it. Ya think God sees nothing wrong with the same kind of dancing that is out there in the world? that God is pleased with music that originated in the world? that God is pleased ...?

But your traditional styles and its associated dance (Waltzing, etc) "originated in the world" too! Or do you think they came down straight from Heaven? You're still not addessing the points everyone is making here.

The fact that the world loves this style of music, is because IT IS OF THE WORLD and it DOES feed the flesh. You can't be a friend of the world (system) without being at emnity with God.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:4)

The world does not love the things of Christ "Men loved the darkness rather than light because their deed were evil". ( John 3:19) Just that fact alone shows that the music is worldly and not of God.

The point has been addressed--no more explanation is necessary.

    linda,
i don't want to seem argumentative, but the world loves chocolate cake too. i'm not giving that up just because the world likes it. but i may bake a chocolate cake and take it to an unsaved neighbor if it gave me the opportunity to share my faith.

Apples and oranges, Joshua--Chocolate cake has NOTHING to do with music styles appealing to the flesh. I'm talking about the "world system"--the "kosmos" as spoken of in 1 John 2:15-17:

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (1 John 2:16)

And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (1 John 2:17)

A person who cannot discern between chocolate cake, dance, music, and the things of the Spirit of God, has a serious problem.

how did david dance in the streets? was there some sort of heavenly dance routine that came down from God - and made david dance naked in the streets?

do you know the meaning of "freestyle" ?
by your response SFIC i dont believe you do.

is God pleased that i make my own dance routine up and praise him in everything i do? yes. i do.

everything was given to man by God. man has just corrupted it.

now lets turn the page upside down and present the idea of: what if the world loved hymns and that it was the number one style of music that they listened to? what about that?

the verse in 1John - "for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."

lets clarify something here - SFIC and Linda - are you talking about the music apart from the lyrics?

    gekko,

Remove the lyrics and compare the music with the popular rock and roll, death metal, rap, etc. You will find no difference.

And just putting gospel lyrics to a rock tune does not make it gospel. It is compromise. Straddling the fence. Wanting to hold on to the things of God and the things of the world.

Ye cannot drink of the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils.

one conclusion i have come to is this:

if christian hip-hop stirs up fleshly desires within you - you are in a serious dilema - get right with God.

lets focus on one instrument at the moment: the guitar.
i play guitar - have been for a few years now.

now i've made up most of what i play - and i play it for a few friends here and there...

the last time i played one of MY SONGS they said that it sounded like a song they've heard from somebody else. (non-christian).

now do you expect me to stop playing the song i made up (taking into account that the Lord helped me write it - because 4 years ago i was NOT musically inclined at all). do you expect me to give up on the song that i made up?

now lets look more at the guitar:

there are 20 frets on my acoustic guitar - with a cutaway. that's only 120 single tones. there are thousands of chords - most sounds similar - one or two notes off - some are far apart.

now is it possible that i could be making something up and occasionally hit a note that is in a secular song?

yes. that's very possible. so am i to throw my guitar out?
