A New Year, A New OS

    ... Windows 3.1 introduced the world to easy computer operations and as a side effect sent all DOS purists into rebellion. A gentleman college student in Europe took the UNIX OS (operating system) and adapted it to Desk-Top usage and there went all the nerds.
    ... As Linux became more and more popular the user base became more diversified and people began to emulate the, now popular, Windows. point and click,OS. Today, there are folks that wish for a new and better supported OS but they are still running Win. 98 and such because they cannot afford a new computer, nor can they chance being caught running a pirated system.
    ... The answer is free! At ubuntu.com is found a "Get It Now" link in the Nav. Bar on the left of the page. On that page there are two offerings of Ubuntu, versions 9.10 and 8.04.3LTS. These numbers represent the release date, year and then the month. LTS stands for Long Term Support and the truth is that they are both supported for a year and 4 months more before the updates cease.
    ... In the forth month of next year the next LTS version is released and will be supported for three years and replaced, for those that want it in two. I use the latest version and update my release every 6 months, I love to live on the cutting edge. If you are not a computer nerd I recommend the Hardy Heron a.k.a. v. 8.04.3LTS, it's very stable and very Windows like. If you run into any problems, need advise or just wish to learn about the system there are Ubuntu live forums and mailing lists that are free and offer 24/7 support. Also you may feel free to IM, PM or email me for assistance.

    http://wubi-installer.org/ is an easy way to sneak in the back door without giving up your own system. I found it better than live cds as it gives you a good idea of how fast Linux can be.

    It installs ubuntu as a program in windows and when you want to get rid of it you can just uninstall it from windows.

    Hey Folks...yeah..I know...been awhile. But i am still kickin'..heh. Just been unavoidably detained.
    Was droppin in and saw this thread. I used to run the Zenwalk version...liked it but with what I have been trying to do online just needed more windows capabilities. But if I ever slow down long enough, it'd be nice to learn how to actually work in the coding then I could learn to build the apps I want or need.
    My computer right now is an older IBM T20..also a problem with that particular version of Linux.
    I did however download the wubi version..want to see how it works with this antique.

    I've got my new OS for the new year... Windows 7. :D I just got it a few months early. ;)

    Nothing wrong with Linux. It's just not my cup of tea.

    Now the whole mac comment... I will be praying for you to repent of your dabblings in the Jobs cult. ;)

    I await windows 7. Ordered it before release and still waiting :tear:

    Lenovo hired some outfit to do it for them or maybe Microsoft, but they are slow plus a whole bunch.

    I now have Windows 7 Professional - SWEET! Now my 'puter is fast as lightening! WAY better than Vista.

    My company just finished beta testing Win7, and the phrase "fantastic, fantastic, fantastic" doesn't conver it enough! Win7 is what Vista should have been. I can't imagine how they could have done a better job!!

    Been running ubuntu on one machine. Have learned to hate it as much as I hate windows and Mac. At least windows has a logical file system.

    Maybe you should look over Google's new system if you don't need much done on your computer. Near instant on and full net stuff with cloud programs. Of course it isn't out yet :-(

    Maybe it's just me, but I don't want a cloud OS. I want my stuff right here on my rig. I mean, if I can't pay my ISP bill I would have no OS to use, or at least no files.

    If you get the chance to give Win7 a spin, Bill, do it. Even if it is at Best Buy or something.

    I have the same feelings about cloud computing but think it might be nice for some stuff if you keep a copy on your own rig.

    Windows 7 = WOW. Came today and I upgraded from Vista - took about three hours but it left all my programs and data intact, everything I've tried works fine. NO REINSTALLING EVERYTHING!:thumbs:

    I tried to install an older program and it failed but gave me a message and asked if I wanted to try to fix. A few clicks and it was running :laugh:

    Am liking this windows 7. I tried the Beta and it was nice but a fresh install and I did not know it would upgrade so nicely.

    If something doesn't work, be sure to try running it in compatibility mode. Win7's compatibility mode seems to work better than Vista's did.

    Actually all of my old programs thus far have worked cept the one I mentioned. I have not found much of anything that isn't as was before and have two that I needed xp for that are buzzing away.

    Hate to say it but I think Micro Soft might have accidently done something right this time, though only one day into the new system :laugh: so allow me a backdoor on that comment!

    I'll have to decline that offer. My problem with Windows has always been security and when the original concept for Windows 7 was announced I was excited that Micro Soft would finally clean their kernel up and enhance the Windows experience. Just as they had in the past, they lied, and I have done the same thing with them that I did with my 8 years invested in my military career, they are both in the toilet. I run trouble free, without spy-ware and without virus attacks. There are 29,952 packages available for just a point and click maneuver. Linux presently holds 32% of the desk top market and the number one Linux OS is Ubuntu and the last time I looked Ubuntu was the number two OS on the market, having edged Mac out of the position. I'll remain with a system that the NSA is not busy helping to develop and it actually does all that it says.
    ... I keep up with a few white papers and all the reports on 7s security is a representation of the very system I'll choose to leave behind. And I saved $219.00 plus the cost of hardware to make 7 run. I can build a brand new Barebones for a school kid for the money I'm saving.
