I need some help understanding the teaching on our rewards in heaven. I understand that once we are saved we cannot lose our salvation but we can lose some or all of our rewards. No one has ever explained to me exactly what these rewards are. What rewards could be taken away? What scripture is used that teaches on rewards. Thanks for your help.

The way I understand rewards is that we are rewarded for our good works. We can receive crowns of righteousness. When we go to heaven, we will lay these crowns at the feet of Jesus. What we do on earth that is good, is our gift to our Savior when we meet Him.

Right now I'm too lazy to look up scripture though. :tongue3:

    http://bible.org/seriespage/assurance-eternal-rewards

The article above is quite lengthy and makes a sound argument for biblical rewards. Another article on it:
    http://bible.org/seriespage/rewards

The rewards are not automatic; they are conditional. This has nothing to do with salvation.

Many do not believe there are rewards but investigation will show that the Bible does teach this.

Along these lines, this is a verse that has humbled me greatly.

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." Eph 2:10

It is humbling to realize that God has set before us good works that were "prepared beforehand". Kind of a path, if you will, that if we lived our lives according to His will we would be following and doing the good works which we were created for. I have wondered how many of those I failed to do? Missed opportunities to do what God had set before me. I try and read this verse often and live my life in a way that I am sensitive to what God has for prepared for me.

    Hi saved by grace

Here is one of the main passage about rewards........

    1 Corinthians 3:11-15
V.11 ¶ For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. v
    V.12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
V.13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
V.14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
V.15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

    --------------------------------------------------

For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

    This foundation, is our salvation:
(The moment we are saved, Christ becomes the foundation of our life.)
-That everything else is built upon.-
And a Spiritual foundation is laid up in heaven for us.
    --------------------------------------------------
Now if any man build upon this foundation

As we live our life we build upon this foundation, both here and in heaven:
(Here by drawing closer to the Lord, and there by the rewards for doing that.)
    --------------------------------------------------
    gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

Here are the six kinds of building material we can use to build our heavenly building:
The first three, are a result of differing digrees of sincerity and faithfulness.
And the last three, are a result of phoniness and unfaithfulness.
E.G. (If in our Christian life, we don’t really commit to the Lord.)
    --------------------------------------------------
    Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire;

This a referance to 2Cor.5:10: Where every Christian’s life will be Judged:
(Not for sin, but for what he has done with it:) (Was it good or bad.)
-Having NOTHING AT ALL to do with Salvation, but just rewards.-
    --------------------------------------------------
and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

The way the Lord describes the Judgement seat of Christ:(For Christians:)
Our life(building), will be tried by fire.

The Lord will put a blow torch to it, to see what it is made of.
And everything that is flammable(wood hay & stubble), will burn away.
    --------------------------------------------------
If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

We shall be rewarded for what ever is left, standing upon the foundation:
(Remember, the foundation is not a reward, it is a gift:) The gift of salvation.
But everything built upon it, that does not burn, will be rewards.
    --------------------------------------------------
If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss:

An interesting thing about this judgement: There will be no punishment, at all:
(Only receiving rewards or missing out on rewards.)
    --------------------------------------------------
but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Now for many Christians, they will be saved, but receive -0- no rewards at all.
(They got saved, and may have done some good things, but before their life was over, they turned from the right path, and lost their rewards.)
    Ezekiel 3:20
“Again, When a righteous [man] doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.”

saved by grace, I am stealing Marcia's first scripture citation, OK? :flower:

This is the one that I always use to teach rewards to my 6th grade at school.

    • Paul says that there is no way to be saved except by Jesus Christ (verse 11)
    • Then he says that people who have that foundation (who are saved) will perform works of gold, silver and precious stones OR of wood, hay, and straw. (verse 12)
    • Next, the fire (God's judgment of our works) will expose everything for what it is. (verse 13)
    • If our works are worthy, then we receive a reward. (verse 14)
    • If our works are not worthy, then we lose rewards. Works have NOTHING to do with our salvation - only our reward. (verse 15)
Here's how I explain it to my 6th graders. Suppse a new family in your church has a death in the family. Suppose the father dies in a car accident.

Now suppose two women from the bereavement committee are bringing food to the home. Both women are saved - Christians. One brings a chocolate cake and the other brings a green bean casserole.

They both come up the sidewalk and enter the home at the same time. They both console the family, pick up around the house, and help out as best they can.

    AND.....

The woman who brings the green beans says to herself as she comes up the driveway. "Dear God, please help me to know what to say to these people. I don't really know them. They are new. Help me to be sensitive to their needs. Please be real to them in their time of grief and help me and our church to reach out as Christ would do. I think I'll help her clean up a little."

    BUT.....

The woman who brings the chocolate cake says this to herself as she comes up the driveway. "The is the LAST time that bake this cake for the bereavement committee. They had NO IDEA how much these ingredients cost. And why should I have to go out of my way for people that I don't even know?!? I'll stay and clean for about 15 minutes and then I'm leaving!"

Perhaps the woman with the bad attitude has had a bad week at work or perhaps she has two sick kids at home. Perhaps she has no excuse.

Either way, despite the fact that she is saved, she will receive no reward in Heaven for taking that cake and helping to clean and bringing aide to the grieving. She will receive nothing for having a heart with no compassion for a family who needs her.

    Feel free.

I have used the "chocolate cake/green bean casserole" story more times than I can count with children. They seem to get a grasp on it.

I read the articles that you posted, thank you. This raises more questions. The article stated that one of our rewards will be greater responsibility in heaven. Why would that be a reward? Are we going to be telling others what to do? Just kidding here but would I get to tell someone to take out the trash?
Another reward is that we will have greater authority in heaven. What exactly does that mean? Authority over who? Sorry but this doesn't make sense to me.
Another reward is that we will reflect more of God's glory. I can understand that but what would be the purpose of that? Would I be able to point to someone and say "Look at me, I have more glory that you"
Many of you have sited 1 Cor. 3:10-16. Verse 15 says that we "will be saved as through fire". What does that mean ...we WILL be SAVED as through FIRE?" If we are already saved why would we be saved again? And what is meant by "fire"?
Why does the verse say that we "will suffer loss'? Thanks again

No, I seriously doubt that! Not sure what they mean by that. My pastor has said that we don't know for sure what the rewards are. I think some of the ideas in those articles are what the author(s) think it may be.

Not sure. I just gave the links as info for you. I skimmed them and they're from what I consider a pretty sound site but that doesn't mean I understand or agree with everything.

I think if you get the reward for this, this is not something you would want to do. You will want to glorify God.

That does not mean saved again.

Some believe this means suffering a loss of rewards.

Much of this is speculation. The best thing to do is to read the passages and think about it over a period of time. I don't think any of us knows for sure what these rewards actually mean as our understanding is limited on this.

The author of the first article said that one reward may be that we will have authority over our own planet. That sounds like Mormonism

Interpreting scripture can be difficult. Not all faiths believe in rewards except for the reward of eternal life. One example is the following:
1 Cor:3 10-15 is used by Catholics as a proof text for a state of purification where sinful works are burned up by the grace of Christ's death on the cross but the individual "suffers" loss. I can see where they get that idea because the verse says "he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire".

As I stated, interpretation is difficult. Thanks again for the links, that is exactly what I had been searching for.
