There are arch angels, some mentioned in the Bible, and there does seem to be a hierarchy of some sort, they seem to be singled out above the other angels.

There are Ceribium which may or may not be angels, they may be the creatures around the throne of God. There are Serifim, which some feel is a different class while others feel it is a descriptive term for the ceribium.

Do a search in your Bible software or concordance and you should find these terms. Also search for Michael and Gabriel.

    Hope this helps.

The Hebrew for "angel" is messanger.

In Genesis 16:7 - It seems the "angel of the Lord," is only there to deliver a message.

In Psalm 34:7 and Psalm 91:11 it appears that the angels take on the duty of "protecting" people.

Genesis 3:24 refers to Cherubim guarding Eden. Ezekial 4:14 is a vision the referes to 4 living creatures that had the form of a man, but with four faces, four wings, feet like calves and hands of men. Later, Ezekial 10:7 refers to one of these creatures as a cherubim. Hebrews 9:5 speaks of the "cherubim of the Glory". Revelations 4:6 creatures the seem to fit the description from Ezekial appear.

Isaiah 6:2 "Above him were seraphs, each with six wings; With two wings they covered thir faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying."

Serphas = angelic beings, the Hebrew is "Burn". This is the only place they are mentioned.

I Thessalonians 4:16 refers to the Archangel, and Jude 1:9 names him, "But even teh archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare bring a sladnerous accusation aboust him."

Garbiel (Luke 1:19 and 26) is called an angel, but is not given a "title".

Daniel 10:13 also describes Michael as "One of the chief princes." It shows Michael protecting the people, and in 12:1 says Michael is the prince who protects the people.

I also heard when it is mentioned "THE angel of the Lord" is Jesus, which is different than "AN angel of the Lord" which would be an angel.

Very true, if you look at the passages, many divine attributes are related to the Angel of the Lord.

For the sake of completeness: Ref: II Cor. 11:13-15, "...For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works".

There be bad angels. They are everywhere. Beware the wolves in sheep's clothing.

    Brother James,

Not to change the tone of this thread, but I have always been fascinated by that particular verse because Mormons claim "Moroni, the angel of light," brought them the "Book of Mormon" and "Pearls of Wisdom."

I knew a woman from Germany who said, "The man who founded that faith was a convicted con-man, and the name of the founding angel is Moron, and they still can't see they are wrong."

To highjack this thread back: ;)

I have often heard that one third of angels are 'fallen' angels...does this have biblical backing?

I have read (somewere) that the "third part of the stars of heaven" (Rev. 12:4) that the dragon's tail swept are the fallen angels.

Yes. Read on into Revelation 12:7

"And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon and his angels fought back."
8 But he was not strong enough and they lost their place in heaven.
9 The great dragon was hurled down - that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan who leads the world astray. He was hurled to the earth and his angels with him. "

"Angel" also refers to the pastor/"messenger" of a church.

"angelos" is another of those confusing transliterations like "baptizo". I can understand why the pedobaptist-sprinkler translators did not use "immerse" for baptizo; but I do not under stand why "messenger" was not used for "angelos". The answer is probably in the puzzling world of "veneration".

It boils to this: there are good messengers(spiritual and physical) and there are bad messengers (spiritual and physical). One could make a similar observation about the inhabitants of the earth: they are either children of God or children of Satan. The world is overrun with demonic spirits and those possessed by them. The demons Jesus cast out said they were "legion" two thousand years ago. They are still here. Some of them recently blew up in the subways of London.

Brother James Reed - You took the words out of my finger tips. lol

Brother James - I suspect they chose another word because they wanted to be clear that these particular messangers were "heavenly beings," and not "human prophets."
