Yes, but that's only because those who believe in the prophecy of "saints" were following the announcement of Saint Malachi (sp?) several hundred years ago who said that there would be "x" number of more popes and then a "black" pope.

Pope Benedict is the xth pope (I can't remember the number) and this next pope will be the xth + 1[SIZE=3] or the "black" one.

[SIZE=3]However, what does "black[SIZE=3] pope" mean[SIZE=3][SIZE=3]? [SIZE=3]Is it skin tone or character of heart[SIZE=3]?

[SIZE=3]And that's only a question for those who believe in that sort of prediction to begin with. But [SIZE=3]I think that's why the speculation was going arou[SIZE=3]nd - but what do I know?

One benefit to Benedict resigning is that he will probably have some influence as to the choice of his successor. Dead popes to get that.

By resigning he positively impacts the perception of the Catholic Church in our day. He has shown great humility and servant leadership by reminding the Catholic Church and all Christians that the office should be more important than any man’s ego in holding the office past his ability to function effectively and to guard the faith. The Bishop of Rome has become increasingly relevant in the modern world and his resignation, I think, underscores that relevancy as well as fosters it further.

May God bless him and grant him a much deserved rest in retirement.

I don't think St. Malachy said anything about a Black Pope. He supposedly predicted that there would be 112 more popes from the time that he made his "prophecy" with Petrus Romanus being the last.

One thing for sure, one side-effect of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI is that an ever-more incompetent and ignorant media will be inundating us with misinformation by the bucketful. You really have to just ignore some of this stupidity. Otherwise your head could explode.

He's just giving his Benediction a bit early.

I do not put much stock in any of the above. How do we really know how many popes there have been. There is at least one man who was elected pope who was so bad he does not appear on an list as a pope ... even though he was. Also there was a time when there was at least three people claiming to be pope as they had been elected by "their cardinals".

I'll just bide my time and watch. I have enough cares to take care of today to worry much about the past or the future of the popes.

I don't read anything sinister into it at all. The following facts have to be taken into account:

    1. ++Benedict had said for at least the last couple of years that he would throw in the towel if he no longer felt up to the job.

    2. His doctor has in effect said he can't do any more transatlantic flights.

    3. The Catholic World Youth Conference is in Rio this summer. This is a pretty massive event in the Catholic calendar.

    4. ++Benedict's view is that the Pope always attends #3, but he can't anymore because of #2, which has effectively catalysed the decision he was contemplating at #1.

So, putting it all together, he felt that now was a good time to step aside to enable his successor to be in place by Easter and to get his feet under the desk in time for #3.

The composition of the photo is very well staged--it has a lot of bogusness about it.

    Satan can fake lightning--now what.

Many will be fooled by the Antichrist as well. If it were possible, even the elect would be deceived.

Are we aware that the papacy is a type of antichrist?

This is no a time for jesting--our redemption draws near.

    Even so, come Lord Jesus.

The sinister part is most folk do not realize that the papacy is the epitomy of that which is sinister. Christ has no vicar. Jesus is the vicar. This makes the unholy see usurpers from the gitgo. Now what?

    Even so, come Lord Jesus.

The new pope will be Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi. He became a Cardinal in 2012.

From Wikipedia: "In April 2011 Patriarch Rai said that, for the sake of communion and love, he would work "to establish a sincere and complete dialogue" with Muslims "and build together a future in common life and cooperation."
