He said he wasn't drunk, and I think we should wait until an investigation. I'll admit he has had troubles in the substance abuse realm.

This isn't even close to the same thing his dispicable father did. Not even close. Accidents happen, even to careful drivers.

The A.P. is reporting he was taking perscription pain medication to treat his gastroenteritis, and that's what he is blaming the accident on. (Still dangling my participles)

WASHINGTON -U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy insisted yesterday that he had consumed “no alcohol” before he slammed his Mustang convertible into a concrete barrier near his office, but a hostess at a popular Capitol Hill watering hole told the Herald she saw him drinking in the hours before the crash.

“He was drinking a little bit,” said the woman, who works at the Hawk & Dove and would not give her name.

ROLL CALL reports: According to a letter sent by Officer Greg Baird, acting chairman of the USCP FOP, the wreck took place at approximately 2:45 a.m. Thursday when Kennedy's car, operating with its running lights turned off, narrowly missed colliding with a Capitol Police cruiser and smashed into a security barricade at First and C streets Southeast.

“The driver exited the vehicle and he was observed to be staggering,” Baird’s letter states. Officers approached the driver, who “declared to them he was a Congressman and was late to a vote. The House had adjourned nearly three hours before this incident. It was Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy from Rhode Island.”

Baird wrote that Capitol Police Patrol Division units, who are trained in driving under the influence cases, were not allowed to perform basic field sobriety tests on the Congressman. Instead, two sergeants, who also responded to the accident, proceeded to confer with the Capitol Police watch commander on duty and then “ordered all of the Patrol Division Units to leave the scene and that they were taking over.”

A source tells the DRUDGE REPORT: "It was apparent that the driver was intoxicated (stumbling) and claimed he was in a hurry to make a vote.

"When it became apparent who it was, instead of processing a normal DWI, the watch commander had the Patrol units clear the scene. The commander allowed other building officials drive Kennedy home."

 

Since none of us were there, our speculations are just that. I am willing to give Congressman Kennedy the benefit of the doubt until there is reason not to do so.

 

Yeah, I wonder how many would have been willing to give him the benefit of doubt if he was a Republican congressman?

I hope we don't have yet another Kennedy engaging in more destructive behavior.

But yet,

I REALLY hope that the Capitol police bigwigs didn't give him preferential treatment.

One concern I have...they asked Kennedy point-blank, "Did you receive preferential treatment?"

His response, on multiple occasions? "I did not ASK for any preferential treatment."

That response is a bit too measured and evasive for my tastes.

But then, maybe it's just me...

If Rep. Cynthia McKinney, Democat, Georgia, had been impaired by either alcohol or medication, maybe she could have received preferential treatment from the Capitol Police.

I've been waiting to hear from the same old suspects (Belafonte,Glover,Jackson, Sharpton, et al); they now have a white male congressman treated differently than a black female congressman. Which situation was more serious? Hitting an officer or driving impaired? To me they are both serious offences. But since the white male is a Kennedy ... fill in the rest ...

If only it had been a white male Republican ... then the shrill voices from the usual suspects would be deafening

 

While our system presumes innocence until proof of guilt, the capital police's handling of this matter clouds both. If Mr. Kennedy was under the influence of alcohol the the field sobriety test should have shown some evidence of this.
But the field sobriety test may also have cleared Mr. Kennedy of changes of D.W.I.. Mr. Kennedy could have easily been telling the truth about his perscription drug use or he could have been "Shaken up by the crash". If the capital police had administered the test instead of playing hot potato with the congressman we would have a clearer pricture of the truth.
Now Mr. Kennedy's claim of sobriety will be questioned and he will be labeled by many with the "like-father-like-son" tag.
Preferenal treatment happens everyday but it often carries with it it's own pricetag.
