How Necessary Is Conservative Seminary to PhD?

    I am interested in pursuing a PhD in Historical Theology in the future, and was just looking over some of the programs out there, but was shocked by the relative little to choose from. :(
    I emailed some Profs who taught in that particular field, and was surprised to see some of them recommend Princeton Seminary/University of Notre Dame/Boston University. Is there a major differance betwixt Historical Theology studies at a SBC seminary or a program at PTS?

    --note--

    BTW The specific area of Historical Theology that I plan to pursue is Protestant Theology since 1800. Specifically a look at major conservative, evangelical figures in German/Dutch Theology in the modern era.

    Hello,

    It sounds like you already have a general idea on what you want to focus on for your dissertation. I'd recommend seeing what faculty in particular could help you. For example, Calvin Seminary would be a good fit if you were interested in Bavinck or even in some lesser known Dutch theologians from that era. Likewise, Princeton Sem is well known for having specialists in Barth.

    There may be some faculty who can help you at an SBC school, but without a more narrow idea of your planned topic it is hard to say anything definitive at this point.

    As my primary creature of interest is the one and only Karl Barth, it sounds like Princeton could be a better choice over the others. (That said, I was also considering a thesis examining Adolf Schlatter's influence on German Protestantism. Princeton also looks like it would fabulous choice for these studies!)

    My primary reason for earning a PhD is the fact that it would hopefully add more brownie points to a resume if applying for a faculty position at an accredited institution ;)

    True! I almost view it as Westminster Theological Seminary's Neo-Orthodox brother :laugh:

    One of the PhD's I contacted strongly recommended pursuing post-doctoral studies at the University of Tübingen in Germany. Perhaps it would add a bit to a resume? [​IMG]

    It looks like PTS sould be my first preference, although Oxford looks like it would not be bad either ;) Regents Park looks like it has a nice campus and maybe a few classes under Ravi Zacharias at Wycliffe Hall couldn't hurt PhD studies.


    It is my prayer that the path to follow would be clear, as it certainly is an important decision in my life! :praying:
